Why we feel regret and guilt about using digital technology in our free time – A European perspective
Despite the widespread use of digital technologies during free time and its potential benefits for wellbeing and recovery from work life, digital engagement is considered a low-quality form of free time that often results in significant regret and guilt. Given its increasing significance as an accessible source of relaxation and enjoyment in today’s post-COVID digitised society and the negative health consequences of chronic regret and guilt, the…
The use of institutionalised and embodied cultural capital in platform-mediated care work
Cultural capital (CC) is often seen as losing relevance in platform work, where job distribution depends on algorithmic rankings and ratings. This study shows that care platform workers actively engage in cultural labour to leverage their CC and improve their chances of securing jobs. The platform itself creates opportunities for such valorisation, reflecting mutual demands for compatibility in intimate care services. Drawing on semi-structured i…
Validation of the immersion in digital life and quality of digital experience scales in German, French, Spanish, Polish and Czech
The Quality of Digital Experience Scale (QDES) and the Immersion in Digital Life Scale (IDLS) were developed to measure positive and negative experiences of digital technology use and the extent to which different facets of life were digital. Critically, the QDES and ILDS were developed to be independent of digital device or platform, thus providing a more holistic account of digital technology use than previous measures. The objective of the cur…
Problematic Internet Use Predicts Lesser Satisfaction with Life, but Psychological Distress Acts as a Mediator
Problematic internet use (PIU) has emerged, from the extensive use of the internet, as a concept to describe and understand the more adverse influences of digitalization on people’s experiences. PIU refers to compulsive or excessive internet use leading to psychosocial impairments (among others, anxiety, depression, lesser well-being), and it has been studied from diverse perspectives. However, the mechanisms through which PIU could exert its imp…
How digital technology can steal your time
Digital devices are marketed as tools to improve efficiency and save time, however their use is also often associated with time pressure, time poverty and reduced wellbeing. Precisely how and why digital technologies reduce the availability of time is largely unknown. This study sought to explore the ways in which people experience a loss of time as a result of digital technology use. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 300 people from…
Chronic time pressure as a predictor of symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress
Chronic time pressure is associated with reduced wellbeing. Feeling chronically harried is associated with increased experiences of the symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. The results emphasize the need for governments, employers and healthcare providers to prioritise reducing time pressure as a mechanism of improving wellbeing
Comparing Airbnb and traditional accommodation experiences using text-mining methods – the hedonic and utilitarian values framework
In recent years, Airbnb has disrupted the accommodation industry, becoming both a valid alternative and a serious competitor to traditional accommodation. Understanding the consumer values associated with Airbnb and hotel accommodations is critical to comprehending travellers’ preferences for the one or the other. This study illuminates the utilitarian and hedonic aspects of travellers’ accommodation experiences with Airbnb and hotels and compare…
