The association of nationwide trainee doctor mass resignations in South Korea with hospital utilization, expenditure, and patient outcomes
In February 2024, over 90% of trainee doctors in South Korea’s teaching hospitals resigned en masse, severely disrupting healthcare delivery. Consumption Responses to Income Shocks through Lottery Winning
We study the effects of lottery winning on consumption spending using household survey data of older individuals aged 50–70 years in Singapore. We find strong consumption responses to a transitory income shock from lottery wins, and lottery winners spend about half of their prizes within 12 months of winning. We study the effects of a new social insurance program for the elderly on their private cash transfers from adult children, living arrangements, and labor supply in South Korea. Using nationally representative household survey data, we find robust evidence that the social insurance program reduced private cash transfers from adult children.
