  • Subsurface constraints amplify vegetation stress during extreme heat and drought in a Mediterranean forest

Open Access•Huanhuan Wang, Qiaoyun Xie et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Drought and extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and intense as the global climate warms, threatening forests worldwide. Subsurface conditions such as soil depth and groundwater availability can influence plant drought vulnerability. Yet, how subsurface factors interact with climate stress and shape forest vulnerability and die-off at landscape scales remains poorly understood. The record-breaking hot and dry 2023–2024 summer in southwe…

  • Biophysical response of a coastal woodland to extreme water deficit during a year of record-breaking heat

Open Access•Caitlin E Moore, Sally Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Global terrestrial and ocean surface temperatures continue to reach record levels, resulting in heat waves, drought, and prolonged heat stress experienced by vegetation in many regions. In 2023–2024, coastal terrestrial ecosystems in Western Australia were particularly affected, experiencing their driest and hottest summer since observations began in the early 1900s. Banksia woodlands are a threatened ecological community in this region that are …

  • Substantial carbon loss respired from a corn–soybean agroecosystem highlights the importance of careful management as we adapt to changing climate

    Open Access•Caitlin E Moore, Christy D Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Understanding agroecosystem carbon (C) cycle response to climate change and management is vital for maintaining their long-term C storage. We demonstrate this importance through an in-depth examination of a ten-year eddy covariance dataset from a corn–corn–soybean crop rotation grown in the Midwest United States. Ten-year average annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE) showed a net C sink of −0.39 Mg C ha −1 yr −1 . However, NEE in 2014 and 2015 from…

  • Radiance-based NIR v as a proxy for GPP of corn and soybean

Open Access•Genghong Wu, Kaiyu Guan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Substantial uncertainty exists in daily and sub-daily gross primary production (GPP) estimation, which dampens accurate monitoring of the global carbon cycle. Here we find that near-infrared radiance of vegetation (NIR v,Rad ), defined as the product of observed NIR radiance and normalized difference vegetation index, can accurately estimate corn and soybean GPP at daily and half-hourly time scales, benchmarked with multi-year tower-based GPP at …
