European air quality in view of the WHO 2021 guideline levels
Although anthropogenic emissions have decreased during the last 2 decades, air pollution is still problematic in Europe. This study analyzes the air quality in Europe using simulations by EURopean Air pollution Dispersion—Inverse Model for the year 2016 with updated emissions in view of the annual guideline levels for particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) released in 2021 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Three …
Strong increase in mortality attributable to ozone pollution under a climate change and demographic scenario
Long-term exposure to ambient ozone (O 3 ) is associated with excess respiratory mortality. Pollution emissions, demographic, and climate changes are expected to drive future ozone-related mortality. Here, we assess global mortality attributable to ozone according to an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenario applied in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models, projecting a …
Global and national assessment of the incidence of asthma in children and adolescents from major sources of ambient NO 2
Pediatric asthma incidence has been associated with exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) in ambient air. NO 2 is predominantly emitted through fossil fuel use in land transportation, power generation and the burning of solid biofuels in households. We simulated NO 2 with a global atmospheric chemistry model, combined with a land use regression model, to estimate NO 2 exposure in all countries worldwide. The global asthma incidence among children …
Changing risk factors that contribute to premature mortality from ambient air pollution between 2000 and 2015
Exposure to ambient air pollution is a major global health risk factor. Using recently updated hazard ratio functions, we estimate that the global premature mortality burden attributable to ambient PM 2.5 and O 3 exposure increased by about 30% and 17%, respectively, from 2000 to 2015. We analyzed these trends in terms of tradeoffs between changes in baseline mortality, population size, age distribution and exposure. Global population growth alon…
Uncertainties in estimates of mortality attributable to ambient PM 2.5 in Europe
The assessment of health impacts associated with airborne particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) relies on aerosol concentrations derived either from monitoring networks, satellite observations, numerical models, or a combination thereof. When global chemistry-transport models are used for estimating PM2.5, their relatively coarse resolution has been implied to lead to underestimation of health impacts in densely populated and…
Tropospheric jet response to Antarctic ozone depletion
The Southern Hemisphere (SH) zonal-mean circulation change in response to Antarctic ozone depletion is re-visited by examining a set of the latest model simulations archived for the Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI) project. All models reasonably well reproduce Antarctic ozone depletion in the late 20th century. The related SH-summer circulation changes, such as a poleward intensification of westerly jet and a poleward expansion of the Ha…
