  • The impact of global warming on U.S. hurricane landfall

    Open Access•Nathan Sparks, Ralf Toumi•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The projection of hurricane activity under climate change is challenging. The Imperial College Storm Model (IRIS) was used to analyse the impact of global warming on North Atlantic hurricane landfall through a storyline approach. The storyline assumes increases of potential intensity as the cause of change with no changes to tracks or basin frequency. This allows study of both recent trends and projections for the first time in a consistent way. …

  • Large dynamic contributions to tropical cyclone precipitation with increasing sea surface temperature

    Open Access•Yawen Yang, Ralf Toumi•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

Understanding the relative contribution of dynamic and thermodynamic factors to tropical cyclone (TC) rainfall is an important challenge. This study examines the response of TC precipitation due to increasing sea surface temperatures (SSTs) using convection-permitting model simulations. The sensitivity of key TC rainfall metrics, including the azimuthally averaged maximum precipitation rate were examined. The amount of scaling of precipitation wi…

  • Beneficial role of diurnal smoothing for grid integration of wind power

Open Access•Anasuya Gangopadhyay, Ashwin K Seshadri et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Smoothing of generation variability, i.e. reduction of variance in the aggregate generation is crucial for grid integration of large-scale wind power plants. Prior studies of smoothing have focused on geographical smoothing, based on distance. In contrast, we propose a novel concept ‘diurnal smoothing’ that depends on spatial variations in the timing of seasonal-mean diurnal cycle peak. Considering the case of India, which experiences a strong di…

  • On the relationship between hurricane cost and the integrated wind profile

    Open Access•Shuai Wang, Ralf Toumi•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

It is challenging to identify metrics that best capture hurricane destructive potential and costs. Although it has been found that the sea surface temperature and vertical wind shear can both make considerable changes to the hurricane destructive potential metrics, it is still unknown which plays a more important role. Here we present a new method to reconstruct the historical wind structure of hurricanes that allows us, for the first time, to ca…
