  • Convection in future winter storms over Northern Europe

Open Access•Ségolène Berthou, Malcolm Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Precipitation within extratropical cyclones is very likely to increase towards the end of the century in a business-as-usual scenario. We investigate hourly precipitation changes in end-of-century winter storms with the first km-scale model ensemble covering northwest Europe and the Baltic region. This is an ensemble that explicitly represents convection (convection permitting models (CPMs)). Models agree that future winter storms will bring 10%–…

  • Testing a simple formula for calculating approximate intensity-duration-frequency curves

Open Access•Rasmus Benestad, Julia Lutz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

A simple formula for estimating approximate values of return levels for sub-daily rainfall is presented and tested. It was derived from a combination of simple mathematical principles, approximations and fitted to 10 year return levels taken from intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves representing 14 sites in Oslo. The formula was subsequently evaluated against IDF curves from independent sites elsewhere in Norway. Since it only needs 24 h rai…
