  • Scale, Depth and Duration

    Open Access•Arne R Wei, Arne R Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2026•Referencias: 1

The study analyses robust, causal evidence of transformational change. We approach this topic by systematically reviewing literature that has the potential to document causal evidence for transformational change across a broad set of interventions and outcomes. Our focus is on evidence found in developing countries to inform climate interventions. We approach this learning exercise directly by looking at the energy sector and indirectly by review…

  • Realist Review on Just Transition Towards Low Emission, Climate Resilient and More Inclusive Societies in Developing Countries

Open Access•Theodora Yeung, Lekha Tlhotlhalemaje et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2026•Referencias: 1

Just transition describes the transformation towards greener, more inclusive, and more resilient economies and societies. This realist review provides a rigorous summary of global evidence on interventions targeting outcomes contributing towards a just transition in developing countries, spanning energy, agriculture and food, infrastructure, and ecosystem services. We found common enablers for just transition interventions across all or most sect…

  • Trusted Evidence, Informed Policies, Higher Impact—Climate Evidence Reviews

Open Access•Martin Prowse, Andreas Reumann•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2026

This Special Issue presents five reviews of global evidence on topics relevant to climate action in developing countries. The SI presents one standalone evidence gap map on results-based payments and three systematic reviews on: transformational change, coastal and terrestrial water sector interventions, and behavioural science. We also present a realist review on just transition. Each review is accompanied by a companion protocol or approach pap…

  • Coastal and Terrestrial Water-Sector Interventions in Developing Countries

Open Access•Genta Konci, Laurenz Langer et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2025

The changing climate severely affects global water resources, threatening water security goals. However, our understanding of the impact of key interventions, particularly in coastal zones and certain types of terrestrial water projects, is limited. This review aims to systematically assess the effectiveness of coastal and terrestrial water-sector interventions at different scales in developing countries. The goal of this systematic review is to …

  • Coastal and Terrestrial Water-Sector Interventions in Developing Countries

Open Access•John Ategeka, Genta Konci et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2025

Climate change is severely affecting global water resources and threatening water security goals. However, our understanding of the impact of key interventions, particularly in coastal zones and certain terrestrial water projects, is limited. The primary objective of this systematic review is to identify, assess and synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of coastal and terrestrial water sector interventions in achieving desired outcomes at vari…

  • Pathways towards just transitions in the Global South

    Open Access•Johanna Gather, Martin Prowse et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2025•Referencias: 6

As global decarbonization efforts accelerate, ensuring a just transition has become a critical objective, especially in low- and middle-income countries where climate action intersects with entrenched development challenges. This study uses a realist review and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of 80 interventions across 76 studies to identify the configurations of financial, institutional, and governance conditions that contribute towar…

  • Evidence Review on Results-Based Payments

Open Access•Josh Meuth Alldredge, Emma De Roy et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2025•Referencias: 2

Results based payments (RBPs), which involve a funder who agrees to make payments to agents for achieving pre-agreed, verified results, are a unique approach that can potentially address the misaligned incentives at the heart of the climate challenge. They can do so by making payments to service providers or to beneficiaries contingent on achieving specific outcomes that deliver public benefits for the global commons. Such approaches are also app…

  • Behavioural Science Interventions in Development and Environmental Fields in Developing Countries

Open Access•Samantha Booth, Romina Cavatassi et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2025•Referencias: 1

Human behaviour is a key driver of climate change yet rigorous empirical guidance is lacking in terms of how behavioural science can effectively support adaptation and emissions reductions in developing countries. This article presents an evidence gap map and the approach for a systematic review on the effectiveness of behavioural science interventions on environmental and development outcomes. The article consists of two parts. First, the articl…

  • Evidence Review on Results-Based Payments

Open Access•Josh Meuth Alldredge, Emma De Roy et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2025

This article outlines the approach for conducting an evidence review on the effectiveness of results-based payments (RBPs). Specifically, this evidence review will adopt a broad approach to take stock of the literature on the effectiveness of RBP interventions across (1) all sectors where they have been used (such as agriculture, education and health); (2) multiple types of outcomes; and (3) multiple levels (namely, assessments of RBP interventio…

  • A Protocol for the Review of Examples of Transformational Change in the Energy and Public Health Sectors to Inform Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Interventions

Open Access•Zharas Aitmambet, Joseph Dickman et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2024•Referencias: 3

This article describes the approach for an evidence review that combines two different evidence gap maps into one learning exercise on transformational change. The review assesses the evidence in two sectors where there has been demonstrable progress in terms of scale, depth and permanence of change: in energy and in behavioural change in public health. The review uses causal evidence to assess how lessons about transformational change in these t…

  • Valuing investments in the Global Carbon Market Mechanism as compound real options

    Open Access•Danny Cassimon, Peter‐Jan Engelen et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

The Global Carbon Market Mechanism (GCMM) aims to incentivize national or sub‐national actors to invest in climate mitigation projects at the same time as limiting the global costs of tackling global warming. Using the worked example of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), this article shows that the exact valuation of a mitigation project requires the application of compound real options techniques, as it is able to account for the multi‐stage…

  • The Evolution of Zimbabwe's Tobacco Industry

Yumi Sakata, Pius S Nyambara et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2022

This article outlines the historical and contemporary landscape of tobacco production and marketing in Zimbabwe. It highlights patterns of boom and bust dependent on global demand, trading frameworks and degrees of government support to the industry, which are reminiscent of cycles of tobacco production elsewhere in the region. It illustrates at the national and farm level the importance of diversified marketing channels: how the Zimbabwean tobac…

  • Tobacco Farming and Agrarian Change in Contemporary Southern Africa - An Introduction

Martin Prowse, Helena Pérez Niño•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2022

For more than a century, tobacco has been a key source of export revenues for both Zimbabwe and Malawi, and, in the past 30 years, production has expanded to parts of Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. The crop continues to be the main livelihood option for millions of citizens in southern Africa, an important source of income and rural employment and one of the few industries in which the region commands a large share of the global market. Combine…

    Martin Prowse•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2013•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 27

During the past century tobacco production and marketing in Nyasaland/Malawi has undergone periods of dynamism similar to changes since the early 1990s. This article highlights three recurrent patterns. First, estate owners have fostered or constrained peasant/smallholder production dependent on complementarities or competition with estates. Second, the rapid expansion of peasant/smallholder production has led to large multiplier effects in tobac…

    Open Access•Martin Prowse•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2009•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 23

Smallholders now grow most of Malawi's main export crop - burley tobacco. Based on nineteen months' fieldwork in the Central Region, this article offers a sociological interpretation of why some smallholder growers spend a proportion of burley income on conspicuous consumption in rural towns and trading centres. This practice can be seen as a form of inculcated behaviour whereby smallholders reproduce elements of one model of success in this regi…

Meteorological records corroborate smallholders’ belief that temperatures are increasing but do not support assertions that rainfall is decreasing. Farm‐level adaptation mainly involves soil and water conservation measures learnt from state‐led schemes as well as plan…

  • Assets and Adaptation

    Open Access•Martin Prowse, Lucy Scott•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2009•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 24

Previously viewed as a somewhat defeatist response to climate change, adaptation is now seen as an essential component of any climate policy (Pielke et al. 2007). There are three main reasons for this increase in interest. First, that the impacts of climate change are already being observed and, because of lags in the natural system, more impacts are inevitable (Burton et al. 2002). Second, that mitigation responses have been slow and inadequate,…

Smallholders grow the majority of Malawi's main export crop - burley tobacco. We analyse this value chain segment for the 2003/4 and 2009/10 seasons. The comparison shows smallholder profits in 2003/4 were limited by two main factors: a cartel of leaf merchants at auction and inefficient marketing arrangements. In 2009/10, there was greater competition at auction, improvements in marketing, tighter state regulation (including minimum prices) and …
