An uncertain future change in aridity over the tropics
An ensemble of climate models from phase six of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project shows that temperature and potential evapotranspiration (PET) are projected to increase globally towards the end of the 21st century. However, climate models show a spatially heterogeneous change in precipitation over the tropics. Consequently, future changes in aridity (a measure of water availability) are complex and location-dependent. We assess future ch…
The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018
Nonlinear response of Asian summer monsoon precipitation to emission reductions in South and East Asia
Anthropogenic aerosols over South and East Asia currently have a stronger impact on the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) than greenhouse gas emissions, yet projected aerosol emission changes in these regions are subject to considerable uncertainties such as timescale, location, or emission type. We use a circulation/climate model with idealised aerosol distributions to demonstrate that the sum of ASM responses to aerosol emission reductions in each reg…
Projected near-term changes of temperature extremes in Europe and China under different aerosol emissions
This study assesses near-term future changes in temperature extremes over China and Europe in scenarios with two very different anthropogenic aerosol (AA) pathways from 2016 to 2049: a maximum technically feasible aerosol reduction (MTFR), and a current legislation aerosol scenario (CLE), both with greenhouses gas forcing following RCP 4.5. Simulations with a fully coupled atmosphere-ocean model HadGEM3-GC2 show that there is an increase in hot e…
The influence of anthropogenic aerosol on multi-decadal variations of historical global climate
Analysis of single forcing runs from CMIP5 (the fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) simulations shows that the mid-twentieth century temperature hiatus, and the coincident decrease in precipitation, is likely to have been influenced strongly by anthropogenic aerosol forcing. Models that include a representation of the indirect effect of aerosol better reproduce inter-decadal variability in historical global-mean near-surface temperatures…
