A staged wildfire evacuation model for wildland-urban interface communities with transient populations
The Multiple Gradual Maximal Covering Location Problem
This article describes a new spatial optimization model, the Multiple Gradual Maximal Covering Location Problem (MG‐MCLP). This model is useful when coverage from multiple facilities or sensors is necessary to consider a demand to be covered, and when the quality of that coverage varies with the number of located facilities within the service distance, and the distance from the demand itself. The motivating example for this model uses a coupled G…
Are Some Cities Disproportionally Affected by Tornadoes
Despite the danger presented to communities, there is still a notable lack of knowledge on how the locations of tornadoes and tornado tracks, especially for violent tornadoes (VTs), vary on small spatial scales, such as in counties or cities. Certain cities like Moore, Oklahoma, have seen an abnormal number of VTs (three) compared to neighboring towns since the beginning of the historic record in 1950. The primary goal of this research was to det…
Approximating the Length of Vehicle Routing Problem Solutions Using Complementary Spatial Information
Accurately estimating the length of Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) distances can inform transportation planning in a wide variety of delivery and service provision contexts. This study extends the work of previous research where multiple linear regression models were used to estimate the average distance of VRP solutions with various customer demands and capacity constraints. This research expands on that approach in two ways: first, the point pat…
Race, rurality and geographic accessibility to medication for opioid use disorder in the U.S
Disparities in geographic access to medication for opioid use disorder (OUD) are well documented.Further, historical implications of systemic racism and of the longstanding War on Drugs in the United States have driven both social and spatial inequities in access to treatment. This work builds on a previously published spatial access methodology that uses a gravity-based variant of the enhanced two-step floating catchment area model, to determine …
Shifting landscape suitability for cocaine trafficking through Central America in response to counterdrug interdiction
Cocaine traffickers, or ‘narco-traffickers’, successfully exploit the heterogeneous landscapes of Central America for transnational smuggling. Narco-traffickers successfully adapt to disruptions from counterdrug interdiction efforts by spatially adjusting smuggling routes to evade detection, and by doing so bring collateral damages, such as deforestation, corruption, and violence, to new areas. This study is novel for its integration of landscape…
Geographic disparities in access to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder across US census tracts based on treatment utilization behavior
Comparative Analysis of Illicit Supply Network Structure and Operations
Illicit supply networks (ISNs) are composed of coordinated human actors that source, transit, and distribute illicitly traded goods to consumers, while also creating widespread social and environmental harms. Despite growing documentation of ISNs and their impacts, efforts to understand and disrupt ISNs remain insufficient due to the persistent lack of knowledge connecting a given ISN’s modus operandi and its patterns of activity in space and tim…
Quality Assessment and Accessibility Mapping in an Image-Based Geocrowdsourcing Testbed
Geocrowdsourcing is a significant new focus area in mapping for people with disabilities. It utilizes public data contributions that are difficult to capture with traditional mapping workflows. Along with the benefits of geocrowdsourcing are critical drawbacks, including reliability and accuracy. A geocrowdsourcing testbed has been designed to explore the dynamics of geocrowdsourcing and quality assessment and produce temporally relevant navigati…
Network Analysis
Network analysis in geography is a subdiscipline that has persisted from the earliest days of the science yet remains an active research area today. Network analysis has had an influence on practical applications and theoretical advances. A mathematical foundation for network analysis in graph theory and topology has led to methods for describing and measuring networks, for determining locations within networks, and for analyzing movement across …
Pedestrian network repair with spatial optimization models and geocrowdsourced data
Geocrowdsourcing and accessibility for dynamic environments
Crowdsourcing techniques for augmenting traditional accessibility maps with transitory obstacle information
One of the most scrutinized contemporary techniques for geospatial data collection and production is crowdsourcing. This inverts the traditional top-down geospatial data production and distribution methods by emphasizing on the participation of the end user or community. The technique has been shown to be particularly useful in the domain of accessibility mapping, where it can augment traditional mapping methods and systems by providing informati…
Maternal–child overweight/obesity and undernutrition in Kenya
Objective The purpose of the study was to examine geographic relationships of nutritional status (BMI), including underweight, overweight and obesity, among Kenyan mothers and children. Design Spatial relationships were examined concerning BMI of the mothers and BMI-for-age percentiles of their children. These included spatial statistical measures of the clustering of segments of the population, in addition to inspection of co-location of signifi…
Network Analysis in Geographic Information Science
Network data structures were one of the earliest representations in geographic information systems (GIS), and network analysis remains one of the most significant and persistent research and application areas in geographic information science (GIScience). Network analysis has a strong theoretical basis in the mathematical disciplines of graph theory and topology, and it is the topological relationships inherent in networks that led to revolutiona…
A Subnational Study of Insurgency
This article examines the traditional political and economic factors that have been purported to explain the prevalence of insurgency. It tests the following hypotheses at the subnational level in Colombia: guerrilla violence is positively associated with exports; higher levels of insurgency are associated with low levels of GDP per capita or negative growth rates; guerrilla violence emerges in the context of weak state presence; and higher level…
Drugs, Violence, and Development in Colombia
Observers say that drug production fuels violence in Colombia, but does coca production explain different levels of violence? This article examines the relationship between coca production and guerrilla violence by reviewing national-level data over time and studying Colombia by department, exploring the interactions among guerrilla violence, exports, development, and displacement. It uses historical analysis, cartographic visualization, and anal…
