Elites of the late Avar period. New finds from Lake Fertő/Neusiedl reveal the location of a power centre from this period
Newly discovered stray finds from the late Avar age shed new light on the significance of the area around Lake Neusiedl/Fertő. All of the artefacts can be dated from the middle of the 8th century and some of them are high quality manufacturing. Growing up Avar
This study investigates adolescence in the early medieval period in Austria by combining historical, archaeological, genetic, and osteological data. To better understand adolescence in the Avar period (650-800 CE), we consulted early medieval inscriptions and historical sources on steppe peoples and correlated them to the osteological findings on the timing of development and the pubertal growth spurt from two Austrian sites. This study investigates the faunal assemblage from excavations in Podersdorf am See (easternmost Austria) dating between the 4th and 6th century AD. The site is located in a flat area east of Lake Neusiedl (Hungarian: Fertő tó), surrounded by numerous (palaeo-)lake depressions and comprises remains of small-scale rural installations from three phases between the 2nd and 13th century AD. A unique archaeological finding of five individuals buried in an early medieval pit house was discovered in Podersdorf am See (Austria). Three of those individuals were buried in narrow grave pits that had been deepened into the house floor; two of them were lying on the pit floor in a crouched position.
