From Berimbolo to Bolo-Player
This paper explores the emergence of the bolo-player as a robust icon of personhood (Carr (2010)) in urban jiujitsu training rooms between China and the United States. I trace how this figure emerges as a kinesically enregistered stereotype (cf. Agha (2007)and Cohen (2021)) within a contrapuntal ecology of motion texts, from its mass-mediated origo: the berimbolo. Toward a non-binary semiotics of intersectionality
This special issue proposes a non-binary semiotics of intersectionality to both draw attention to and unsettle binary participation frameworks of "the-West-and-its-others." It focuses on the mobilisation of English language performatives like “calling points of order” during televised parliamentary debates. Aspirational Histories of Third World Cosmopolitanism
This article follows four years of ethnographic research in Beijing and investigates tropes of “third world solidarity” (termed disanshijie datuanjie 第三世界大团结) and “cosmopolitanism” as they are pragmatically recruited or intersubjectively evoked in urban Afro-Chinese interactions.
