  • Cranial morphometry of early hominids

    Open Access•Alan Bilsborough, B A Wood•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1988•Citada por: 44•Referencias: 36

We report here on early hominid facial diversity, as part of a more extensive morphometric survey of cranial variability in Pliocene and early Pleistocene Hominidae. Univariate and multivariate techniques are used to summarise variation in facial proportions in South and East African hominids, and later Quaternary groups are included as comparators in order to scale the variation displayed. The results indicate that “robust” australopithecines ha…

  • Phylogenetic Analysis of Early Hominids [and Comments and Reply]

    Randall R Skelton, Henry M Mchenry et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1986•Citada por: 76•Referencias: 40

The proposal of the new australopithecine species Australopithecus afarensis has led to a multiplicity of hypotheses concerning the evolutionary relationships between the known Pliocene and Pleistocene hominid species. We use phylogenetic analysis to gain a new perspective on the subject. Using 69 traits, we construct a series of 12 complexes, each with a defining polarized morphocline. Four mutually exclusive cladograms are derived from these co…

  • Implications of Border Cave Skeletal Remains for Later Pleistocene Human Evolution [and Comments and Reply]

    G P Rightmire, Peter Beaumont et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Citada por: 51•Referencias: 13

Recent excavations have helped to clarify the cultural and stratigraphic sequences at Border Cave, and human skeletal remains recovered at this South African site may well be associated with a Middle Stone Age industry. A partial adult cranium is of particular interest, and this was originally described as quite different both from African Negro and from Bushman individuals. Eleven measurements were taken on the fossil, and these provide a basis …
