Formation of Mesolithic hunting campsites
The organisation of hunter-gatherer campsites and whether repetitive behaviour patterns are reflected in the cultural and functional context of archaeological sites remains an important issue in Mesolithic archaeology. We analysed the material from the Rydno and Wieliszew sites in Poland, using the refitting of flint artefacts, the identification of use-wear on tools, and their spatial analysis to deliver the reconstruction of socio-technical pro…
Wood or Soil? A Functional Analysis of Neolithic Rhyolite Gouges from Central Sudan Using Experimental Archaeology and Use Wear Study
Since the Khartoum Neolithic was first identified, gouges have frequently been associated with this cultural horizon, yet their function has remained a subject of ongoing debate. Interpretations of their use have often been speculative, lacking robust scientific evidence from systematic analysis. This article addresses this gap by presenting a comparative study between experimentally replicated tools and archaeological specimens. The experimental…
Early Holocene El-Ghorab Hunter-Gatherers of the Gebel Ramlah Playa, Egyptian South-Western Desert
During the Holocene, diverse human groups of hunter-gatherers and pastoralists inhabited the Egyptian Western Desert. These Early Holocene populations were attracted by resources associated with numerous temporary lakes ( playas ) and related wetlands, which characterized the Western Desert during wet climatic oscillations at that time. The Gebel Ramlah region, adjacent to Nabta-Kiseiba, is one of the richest areas of Holocene settlement and has …

The Preservation Potential of Residues on Stone Tools from Less Favourable Contexts
This article is a preliminary discussion of the scientific value of archival lithics kept in museum collections and storage based on a small sample of Late Mesolithic flint artefacts from the site of Tomaszów II in south-eastern Poland, which was subjected to organic residue analysis. The aim of the trial study was to investigate and assess the preservation potential of organic residues on stone tools from sites located in areas not favourable to…
Nieborowa – Campsites of a Mesolithic Community in the Context of Spatial-Functional Studies (Poland). Interpretation of the Settlement Model
The reconstruction of the spatial organisation of Mesolithic camps was presented using the example of two selected concentrations of flints from a site located in central eastern Poland. The basis for the spatial-functional studies was the use of the refitting of flint artefacts, identifying microwear on tools, and the analysis of the horizontal distribution of finds expressed through maps generated with the use of the Surfer software. This paper…

Expedient and efficient
The Northern European Mesolithic is well known for the manufacture of composite tools and weapons for specialised purposes. A composite implement recovered from the Early Holocene site of Krzyż Wielkopolski 7 in Poland, dated to the Preboreal/Boreal transition, raises questions about expediency versus efficiency in the fabrication of these artefacts. Here, the authors characterise its materials and production: a bone splinter mounted on a shaft o…
Flint manufacturing of the Globular Amphorae culture at the site Wilczyce 10 (Lesser Poland) in the context of inventories from the neighbouring areas
The paper discusses three flint inventories of the Globular Amphorae culture from the site in Wilczyce located on the Sandomierz Upland (Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Lesser Poland). The said inventories were collected during the exploration of settlement-type pits. The paper also includes a functional analysis of all tools and blades and the collection of selected flakes. The raw material structure of the discussed inventories shows that the Late …
Comparison of Different Gouge Collections from Central Sudan
This article represents a basic comparison of gouge collections from three different sites (Esh Shaheinab, Fox Hill and Kadero). These sites have revealed important collections of lithics from the Early Neolithic period in Central Sudan. Gouges were chosen as an important marker of various activities, and these were studied on the basis of examining this type of artefact. This paper presents basic observations on the technology and function of th…

Rydno IV/47. Organizacja przestrzenna obozowisk w krzemienicy kultury janisławickiej w świetle badań funkcjonalnych, składanek oraz planigrafii znalezisk archeologicznych
The article studies Mesolithic campsites of Janisławice culture at the Rydno IV/47 site in terms of their spatial organization and functional attributes. Traseological analyses of flint artifacts (scrapers, endscrapers, burins, points, truncated blades, retouched blades and flakes, crested blades and ordinary blades) from three concentrations revealed use-wear traces in the case of 32 specimens. These traces could be attributed to activities such…
Animal Perforated Teeth Deposit From Magdalenian Site at Wilczyce (Southeastern Poland). What They Were Used For? A Use-Wear Case Study
Many years of research on archaeological site at Wilczyce brought into light a unique and diversified evidence of the Late Magdalenian hunters living in southeastern Poland. Among several thousands of artefacts one hundred sixty two perforated teeth of arctic fox were discovered. There were deposited in one spot of ca. 10 cm in diameter, close to female skeleton in prenatal age. Large part of the assemblage (few dozens of best preserved pieces) w…
Grób kultury ceramiki sznurowej ze stanowiska 10 w Wilczycach, pow. sandomierski
The authors of the paper present the results of research, the subject of which was the inhumation burial of the Corded Ware culture from Wilczyce. The site is located on the culmination of the southern slope of a loess hill, rising directly above the valley of the Opatówka River. The grave goods consisted of: an amphora, three cups, two miniature vessels, 41 wolf tooth pendants and disc-shaped shell beads. Radiocarbon dating result on bones from …
