    William A Lessa•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•1969

SOME CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE, said Henry David Thoreau, very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk. That is the theme of this essay. In Micronesia, especially the Caroline Islands, there is an outstanding method of divination called bwe, which makes use of knotted palm leaflets. It is so similar in its methodology and permutations to the ancient Chinese i pu, using the random selection of the so-called diagrams, as to merit attention as on…

    William A Lessa, William Lessa•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1950•Citada por: 3

Anthropologists have long been aware of the existence of the miniature empire of Yap. Until now, however, we have imperfectly understood the nature of the bonds which have held together this insular domain. Previous accounts, especially by those Germans of the Thilenius expedition who investigated the ethnology of the Caroline Islands 40 years ago, have been inadequate. A suitable understanding of the native system of interrelationships is a matt…

  • Population dynamics of an atoll community

    William A Lessa, George C Myers•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1962•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

A 1960 census of population for Ulithi atoll in Micronesia permits comparison with a prior enumeration conducted in 1949. During the intercensal period, a marked increase in population is noted, reversing a long-term trend of depopulation for the atoll community. Data on mortality, fertility, migration, and family structure are presented to examine changes in the population balance. The conclusions of the study lend support to a previous contenti…
