  • Prevalence and clustering of diarrhoea within households in India

Open Access•Bevin Vijayan, Mala Ramanathan•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2021

Diarrhoeal disease is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in children and is usually measured at individual level. Shared household attributes, such as improved water supply and sanitation, expose those living in the same household to these same risk factors for diarrhoea. The occurrence of diarrhoea in two or more children in the same household is termed ‘diarrhoea clustering’. The aim of this study was to examine the role of impr…

  • Treatment and rehabilitation of stroke patients in India

Bevin Vijayan, Mala Ramanathan et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2021

We attempt a gendered inspection of sex differentials in care following stroke in India using data from two rounds of NSSO. While almost all men and women receive allopathic care, a higher percentage of women (51.8%) were treated in public hospitals compared to men (32.6%) in 2014 and 2017-18 (45.8% vs 41.4%). Men were preponderantly treated in private hospitals (67.4%) compared to women (48.2%) in 2014 and 2017-18 (58.6% vs 54.2%). We provide ev…

  • Conceptual model for dietary behaviour change at household level

Open Access•Meena Daivadanam, Rolf Wahlström et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

This type of framework analysis made it possible to develop a conceptual model that could facilitate the design of intervention strategies to aid a household-level dietary behaviour change process

  • Correlates of Female Sterilization Regret in the Southern States of India

    Open Access•Mala Ramanathan, Udaya S Mishra•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2000

This study analyses factors associated with the incidence of sterilization regret in the four south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Using data from the National Family Health Surveys, in all four states the incidence of regret was found to be less than 10% and the factors significantly associated with it were child loss experience and quality of services. Hence, there is a need to improve the quality of services…

  • Induced abortion potential among Indian women

Udaya S Mishra, Mala Ramanathan et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1998•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

Information on abortion is limited and inaccurate, especially in the developing world, which has led to speculation on the prevalence of abortion in these regions. A rise in prevalence of abortion is mostly counted in terms of increase in the prevalence of induced abortions which reflects on the reproductive health of women. With the growing concern for the reproductive health of women, the study of abortion has drawn the attention of researchers…

  • Quality of care in laparoscopic sterilisation camps

    Mala Ramanathan, T R Dilip et al.•ARTICLE•Reproductive Health Matters•1995•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

Laparoscopic sterilisations are performed in institutional as well as mobile settings, known as camps, under the Indian Family Welfare Programme. One such camp, held at a Taluk (sub-district) hospital in Palakkad district in Kerala, was observed as part of a study on quality of services in this Programme. Services in sterilisation camps in Kerala were found to be better than elsewhere in India, but they did not conform to the standards laid down …
