Smoking and physical activity may represent mechanisms through which SEP becomes biologically embedded and shapes the risk of mortality among adults in Canada. This research examines the experiences of female domestic workers in Calcutta, India, with a focus on the relationships between the workers and their female employers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirty female domestic workers in Calcutta in 2015–2016. Associations of friendship and children’s physical activity during and outside of school
Friendships play a significant role in child development and may influence children's physical activity (PA). Using a whole-network approach, this study examined whether school-based friends are more similar in their pedometer-measured PA compared to children who are not friends, and whether these patterns vary by gender, strength of friendship (best vs. close friends), and during vs. outside of school. Using nationally representative data from the 2013 Canadian Community Health Survey, this article examines the prevalence and patterning of self-reported everyday discrimination in Canada. Almost twenty-three percent of Canadians report experiencing everyday discrimination. Post-secondary students’ views on health
This paper examines how post-secondary students understand health, and whether opinions about health are correlated with area of study. We present results from an online survey administered in 2011 to 287 students at one post-secondary institution in Western Canada. Small area contextual effects on self-reported health
These findings demonstrate that, even within a cohesive community, contextual effects on health can be located at a smaller geographic level than the Census tract. Research on the effects of local area socio-economic disadvantage on health that combines administrative and survey data enables researchers to develop more comprehensive measures of social and material deprivation.
