  • The interaction between clause size and Voice

Open Access•Leonardo Russo Cardona, Xavier Villalba•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2025

This is an accepted article with a DOI pre-assigned that is not yet published. We argue that in certain reduced embedded clauses Voice behaves differently from ev-erywhere else, on the basis of tough-constructions (TCs) and modal passives (MPs) in Ital-ian and Catalan. These constructions involve an A-dependency targeting only internal ar-guments of morphologically active transitive infinitives (unlike control/raising/restructuringdependencies) be…

  • Exclamatives, try to be a bit more assertive

    Open Access•Xavier Villalba•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2025

Trotzke and Giannakidou advance the strong hypothesis that exclamative sentences and exclamations can be reduced to a combination of three basic sentence-types (declaratives, interrogatives, and imperatives) with added intensity for emphasis. Moreover, they give convincing arguments for treating root exclamatives as clauses subordinated to an emotive predicate. In this commentary I briefly evaluate such claims on empirical and theoretical grounds

  • From a movement verb to an epistemic discourse marker

    Open Access•M Teresa Espinal, Cristina Real-Puigdollers et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 57

Besides its main use as a form of the movement verb ir 'to go', the Spanish form vaya (lit. go) is also used as a verbal discourse marker. Here we trace this transition from a purely verbal form to a discourse marker by searching a historical corpus of documents in Spanish, which reveals the increasing use over time of vaya in exclamatives to replace a presentational construction. We focus on vaya in isolation and in combination with an indefinit…

  • Romance exclamative markers at the syntax-pragmatics interface

    Open Access•Xavier Villalba•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 49

In this paper I will analyze the set of markers that have been associated with exclamative sentence-type and exclamations in Romance, like Catalan ma, mira, que, and si, Italian guarda and che, or Spanish mira, que, si, and vaya. The hypothesis I will defend is that the meaning encoded by each of these markers contribute to create an exclamation speech act. I will show that we must first distinguish mirative markers like ma, mira or guarda, which…

  • Bridging Strength, Monotonicity, and Word Order Choices in Catalan

Lisa Brunetti, Laia Mayol et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•2020•Referencias: 41

Three experimental studies are presented testing the choice of a left or a right dislocation in Catalan, depending on the bridging relation between the dislocate and its antecedent. We make the hypothesis that the stronger the anaphoric link between the dislocate and its antecedent, the more appropriate a right dislocation is, whereas the opposite is true for left dislocation. The results of two acceptability judgment experiments partially suppor…

  • Exclamatives as responses at the syntax-pragmatics interface

  • InfinitiveWh-Relatives in Romance

    Open Access•Xavier Villalba•ARTICLE•Syntax•2019•Referencias: 53

Romance clitic left dislocation is widespread across all kinds of nonroot contexts, but it is forbidden in infinitivewh-relatives. This article investigates the extent and nature of this restriction and the consequences it raises for the truncation and intervention analyses of the left periphery of embedded sentences. We will show that current proposals cannot account for the whole gamut of data. In consequence, we will propose that infinitivewh-…

  • Oraciones Exclamativas

  • Ambiguity resolution and information structure

    M Teresa Espinal, Xavier Villalba•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2015

In this paper we focus on the topic of ambiguity resolution in and beyond grammar. We deal with two questions: where is ambiguity resolved (in particular, the ambiguity of expressions conveying specific forms of information packaging and common ground management), and what is the design of grammar that emerges from the study of ambiguity problems. After a review of the standard analysis of ambiguity within the Principles and Parameters model, in …
