Operationalizing Borrowability
Operationalizing Borrowability
This study provides two mathematical formalizations of borrowability. These operationalizations allow us to quantitatively evaluate the borrowability of phonological segments and to make predictions about the likelihood that speech sounds will be borrowed in language contact situations. Our approach departs from traditional borrowability hierarchies based on qualitative observations and instead provides empirically motivated models based on proba…
The Impact of Post-Migration Factors on Posttraumatic Stress and Depressive Symptoms among Asylum Seekers in the United States
Recent theoretical and empirical studies suggest that post-migration (PM) factors contribute to negative mental health outcomes for asylum seekers, but few studies have used longitudinal data. This study examines the impact of changes in PM factors (housing, employment, asylum status) on symptom severity level among torture-surviving asylum seekers (n = 78). Participants’ symptoms improved over time, independent of changes in measured PM factors.…
Distinguishing war-related PTSD resulting from perpetration- and betrayal-based morally injurious events
The associations of perpetration and betrayal with PTSD, controlling for danger-based combat events, highlight the limitations of conceptualizations and treatments of PTSD based on fear or helplessness as sole etiologic factors. (PsycINFO Database Record
