How grandparental involvement predicts preschoolers’ social development in Chinese families.
6.00, 48.8% girls), the present study examined whether the quantity (i.e., frequency and breadth) and quality (i.e., grandparenting behaviors and intergenerational coparenting) of grandparental involvement predicted children's social development. Latent growth curve and structural equation modeling revealed that the quality of grandparental involvement was significantly associated with growth in children's social skills and problem behaviors. Parent–Adolescent Relationship Quality and Parenting Stress Across More Than Two Decades
Parenting stress is associated with negative outcomes for both parents and their children, and it may be influenced by the quality of relationships that parents had with their own parents. To enhance understanding of this intergenerational relation, the present study examined whether stability and change in depressive symptoms mediated the association between parent–adolescent relationship quality during adolescence and subsequent parenting stres…
Latent Classes of Adverse and Positive Childhood Experiences and Associations With Depression Among Racially/Ethnically Minoritized Adolescents
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are risk factors for adolescent depression, and positive childhood experiences (PCEs) are protective factors. It remains unclear how ACEs and PCEs cluster and predict depression in racially/ethnically minoritized adolescents. Our study aims to examine the subgroups of ACEs and PCEs in the family, school and neighbourhood contexts and their effects on the depression of racially/ethnically minoritized adolescent…
Intergenerational coparenting and child development outcomes

Investigation of the bidirectional relations between adolescents' anger at their parents and symptoms of depression
Ethnic Comparisons in Perceptions of Health, Happiness, Hope, and Related Social Determinants of Health in a Majority-Minority Midwestern Town
In a rural Midwestern community sample (n=273), large proportions of Somalis and Whites ranked overall health as "Very good" (57% and 50%, respectively), while Hispanics (42%) considered it "Good". Across all groups, most are either "Happy" or "Very happy" with their jobs—64%, 91%, 83%—or their families—85%, 93%, 91.6%— with reference to Hispanics, Somalis, and Whites, respectively. When asked “In the past 30 days, how often did you feel hopeless…
Emotional support and mental health among Somali men in a rural Midwestern town
Perceived social support has been correlated with refugees’ positive mental health outcomes; yet, little is known about the perceived sources of support after secondary migration to new-destination rural towns. Somali refugee men (n _ 49) residing in a rural Midwest United States community were recruited using respondent-driven sampling to complete a self-administered structured survey in English or Somali using audio computer-assisted self-inter…
Parental Alcohol Use and the Alcohol Misuse of their Offspring in a Finnish Birth Cohort
The longitudinal and bidirectional association between parenting stress and couples' relationship quality
This study examined the longitudinal and bidirectional association between parenting stress and relationship quality, and whether the associations differed between married and cohabiting couples, using cross‐lagged panel models (CLPM) and random‐intercept cross‐lagged panel models (RI‐CLPM). Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Well‐being Study, the findings indicated that the RI‐CLPM model provided a better fit to the data compared to …
An event-level examination of successful condom negotiation strategies among young women
This study examines the effect of condom negotiation strategies on condom use and partner type and substance use before sex as moderators of strategy effectiveness. Women reported their daily sexual behavior during the last month. Withholding sex was more strongly associated with condom use when utilized with a non-casual sex partner. Directly requesting condom use was more strongly and using deceptive reasons to influence condom use was less str…

Apologies in Close Relationships
This article summarizes current theory and research related to apologies in close relationships. Eight studies examined predictors of the occurrence and effectiveness of apologies, and 7 studies investigated outcomes associated with apologies. Two studies investigated predictors and associated outcomes of apologies. Findings indicated that characteristics of the victim (e.g., willingness to empathize), characteristics of the transgressor (e.g., g…
Adherence and Dosage Contributions to Parenting Program Quality
Findings suggest that ensuring a high degree of adherence can contribute to quality program delivery. However, more exploration is needed to better understand the ways in which adherence and dosage of DEI elements affect program quality
Person‐Centered Approaches to Understanding Early Family Risk
Research consistently indicates that exposure to early family adversity is associated with compromised development in early childhood. Consequently, researchers, direct service workers, and policy makers have sought to understand and alleviate the multidimensional stressors faced by families during the prenatal and early childhood periods. Person‐centered approaches are one method of understanding the interplay of risk factors. The present review…
Condom Negotiation
The aim of this review was to summarize factors associated with condom negotiation among heterosexual men. Literature searches were conducted using multiple databases spanning several disciplines. Studies examining psychological, demographic, relational, communication, and environmental factors related to condom negotiation are described, and a three-dimensional framework of condom negotiation is proposed. This framework of condom negotiation may…
An Introduction to Latent Variable Mixture Modeling (Part 1)
OBJECTIVE: Pediatric psychologists are often interested in finding patterns in heterogeneous cross-sectional data. Latent variable mixture modeling is an emerging person-centered statistical approach that models heterogeneity by classifying individuals into unobserved groupings (latent classes) with similar (more homogenous) patterns. The purpose of this article is to offer a nontechnical introduction to cross-sectional mixture modeling. METHOD: …

Latent variable mixture modeling is an emerging statistical approach that models such heterogeneity by classifying individuals into unobserved groupings (latent classes) with similar (more homogenous) patterns. The purpose of the second of a 2-article set is to offer a nontechnical introduction to longitudinal latent variable mixture mo…
Intergenerational Transmission of Emotion Dysregulation Through Parental Invalidation of Emotions
Adolescent reactions to maternal responsiveness and internalizing symptomatology
A daily diary methodology was employed to gather teens' perceptions of maternal responsiveness to daily stressful events and teens' reactions to maternal responsiveness in a diverse sample (792 entries from 104 teens; 81% African American, mean age = 13.7 years). Additionally, parents and teens completed baseline reports of internalizing symptoms. Diary findings were congruent with prior studies employing self‐report measures of global maternal r…
Examination of consistency of adolescent and parent reports across several psychosocial constructs
This study investigated the consistency of discrepancy scores between adolescent and parent reports across several psychosocial constructs (adolescent internalizing, externalizing, emotion regulation difficulties, parent rewarding responses to adolescent emotions, and parent depressive symptoms). Sixty‐two adolescents (67.7% females; 76.7% African American) and one of their parents participated. Most of the associations among discrepancy scores w…
Beyond relationship reciprocity
The present research extends the use of a new scheme for classifying children's peer relationships that (a) jointly evaluates friendship and antipathy nominations and (b) includes nonreciprocated friend and antipathy nominations. Findings revealed that 12.1% of all classroom dyads (total dyads = 2,313) were unbalanced relationships, in which one child perceived a friendship but was disliked by the other child. Furthermore, having high frequencies…
Investigation of Change in Adolescent Perceptions of Mothers' and Fathers' Contributions to Interparental Discord From 7th to 9th Grades
The purpose of the present study was to examine whether adolescent perceptions of mothers' and fathers' contributions to interparental discord changed from early to middle adolescence and if the changes were related to adolescent negative mood. Data were drawn from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. Adolescents who were in 7th grade at the Wave 1 assessment and lived with both biological parents during Waves 1–4 were included in this…
Trajectories of PTSD and substance use disorders in a longitudinal study of personality disorders
This study investigated the co-occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) in a sample ( N = 668) recruited for personality disorders and followed longitudinally as part of the Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study. The study both examined rates of co-occurring disorders at baseline and temporal relationships between PTSD and substance use disorders over 4 years. Subjects with a lifetime …
Emotion regulation as a mediator of the relation between emotion socialization and deliberate self-harm
This study examined (a) whether retrospective reports of specific parent responses to sadness (i.e., reward, punishment, neglect, override, magnification) were related to deliberate self-harm (DSH) and (b) whether difficulties regulating emotions (i.e., difficulties monitoring, evaluating, and modifying emotions) mediated those relations. One hundred eighteen college students completed measures of parental emotion socialization, emotion regulatio…
Mentoring relationships for youth
We investigated a process‐oriented model of mentoring using data on 50 relationships in a Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Data were collected on a monthly basis from both mentors and youth over a one‐year period; relationship benefits for youth were assessed at the end of the year by each type of informant. The degree to which relationships were continued throughout the one‐year period also was assessed. Path analyses using both youth and mento…
