Robert Taft
This article outlines the treatment of photography as a mass medium of illustration in Robert Taft’s Photography and the American Scene, a “social history” of photography that appeared in 1938, the same year that saw the publication of Beaumont Newhall’s much better known “critical history.” The contrast and the dialogue between the two histories and their authors form a backdrop to the argument. Drawing from Taft’s text and his unpublished paper…

Conditions pratiques, techniques, sémantiques, juridiques, institutionnelles, organisationnelles... …
Nationalities and Universalism in the Early Historiography of Photography (1843–1857)
This article considers the fluctuation, in early commentary and historiography of photography (1843–1857), between the recurring expression of nationalities as criteria of photographic practice and an aspiration to regard the new medium as a promising universal language. Several key texts from the period are examined, including David Brewster's and Elizabeth Eastlake's landmark essays, as well as reports from the juries of the Expositions of 1851…
Inventing the Literary Prehistory of Photography
This paper provides an overview of a trend in photo-history that has, from 1839 to the late twentieth century, sought to uncover, or indeed to invent, literary ‘premonitions’ of the invention of photography. The paper focuses primarily on two historians of photography, François Arago and Helmut Gernsheim. The production of a ‘literary’ prehistory of photography is interpreted as denoting a wish to counterbalance its association with science
Revisiting the enigmas of Timothy O'Sullivan
This paper seeks to shed new light on the much-discussed survey work of American photographic pioneer Timothy H. O'Sullivan through a close analysis of a hitherto unnoticed collection of King Survey photographs at the Univrsity of California's Bancroft Library. Among the notable features of this collection is the appearance, in seven rare views of Eastern California, of a ‘T.H.O'S.’ monogram, as well as the existence of a double set of captions, …
This co-authored paper seeks to describe a recent epistemological trend in both American art history and visual culture studies, i.e. the tendency towards de-estheticizing art and visual culture and re-contextualizing visual works in social, cultural, and political terms. The first part of the paper examines more specifically the concerns and methods adopted in a number of recent prominent books and exhibitions on American art. It emphasizes an i…

Emerson et la figure de l'inventeur
This article seeks to interpret the ubiquitous presence of the inventor in Emerson’s writings. What power(s) is this figure endowed with—historical and social as much as poetic and philosophical—for Emerson to write that “one must be an inventor to read well”, or that “only an inventor knows how to borrow”? These paradoxes highlight moments of special energy in the essays, where the (practical) model of the inventor serves to typify the (moral an…
Traduire le paysage absolu. À propos des cartes postales de Niagara
This paper aims at assessing popular images of Niagara Falls, through the analysis of a corpus of postcards sent from 1900 on. It begins with an overview of classic descriptions of the site, which registered early on the dilemma of the sublime-seeker in the midst of popular culture. Then, an examination of the postcards shows how publishers have sought both to maintain a body of standard «views » and to compensate for banalization by renewing the…

Frémont et le daguerréotype
One of few nineteenth-century explorers to achieve popularity in the U.S., John C. Fremont promoted innovative scientific methods. This paper focuses on his use of the daguerreotype, especially in 1853, and the unusual attention he paid to his daguerreotypist Solomon Carvalho 's work. This seems to have reflected Fremont's political aims. From his attitude, as well as from Carvalho's narrative, it appears that the daguerreotype, while providing a…
Poe à la croisée des chemins
Against the common view of Poe as a romantic occultist, this paper attempts to describe the significance of scientific rationality as a source and model for his short fiction. Through the analysis of "Hans Pfaall", his famous early hoax, we bring to light the problematic of narrative credibility and self-evidentiality, which as J. Irwin has shown, is central to Poe's skeptical imagination. This problematic, which we also relate to the status of w…
O’Sullivan was here
This paper discusses problems of interpretation encountered when reading Second View : the Rephotographic Survey Project (1984). The book is presented as the report of a project the aim of which was to « rephotograph » the West as photographed by 19th-century Federal Survey photographers (especially O'Sullivan, and Jackson). A study of landscape change ? An archaeology of photographic pioneers ? Conceptual art ? Post-modern rediscovery of the Ame…
Picture Maker of the Old West
Linguisters on the prairie »
