Sex Differences in Recovery Capital Gains Post-Incarceration
Background People with substance use disorders are highly prevalent in the carceral system. State population indices predict Asian American and Pacific Islander successful substance use treatment completion
Cultural capital is a known factor supporting success in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. We investigated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) State population metrics in relation to SUD treatment completion for US clients from 2006-2017 ( N = 5,404,374). Metrics that may signify greater available cultural capital were State AAPI Percentage, State AAPI Percent Change, and State AAPI Population. AAPI Percentage, AAPI Percent Change we…
Community Treatment for Opioid Use Disorders in Urban and Rural Veterans
PURPOSE: As almost a quarter of our nation's veterans reside in rural settings, the United States Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is interested in the impact of this epidemic on rural veterans. This study aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the trends in substance use disorders (SUD) in veterans seeking treatment from community, non-VHA providers. METHODS: Using Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)'…

A brief report on Hispanic youth marijuana use
Increases in Hispanic youth admissions to substance abuse treatment programs for marijuana use are a growing public health concern. In this study, we investigated trends in Hispanic youth from 1995 to 2012 utilizing the Treatment Episode Data Set-Admissions of the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration. Hispanic youth marijuana admissions are associated with youth 15-17 years old, in high school, and living in a dependent situation…
Menominee Perspectives on Commercial and Sacred Tobacco Use
The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin has the highest smoking rate in the state. To address the resultant health disparities, the tribe conducted a qualitative pilot project to examine tobacco use. The findings indicated mainstream models of addiction did not capture the tribe's context well; the Indigenist Stress-Coping Model was most applicable. Participants suggested that Menominee-centric ways of knowing related to commercial and sacred tob…
Development of parenting self‐efficacy in mothers of infants with high negative emotionality
Maternal parenting self‐efficacy (PSE) is a potential target for infant mental health interventions because it is associated with a number of positive outcomes for children and mothers. Understanding the development of maternal PSE under conditions of increased parenting stress, such as parenting an infant who is easily distressed and difficult to soothe, will contribute to providing more effective interventions. This study examines the developme…

Remission from Substance Dependence in U.S. Whites, African Americans, and Latinos
The authors investigated remission from any type of substance dependence in Latinos, African Americans, and Whites using the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a national sample of community adults. Analyses focused on the 4,520 participants who indicated prior-to-last-year dependence on either alcohol or drugs. Outcome was categorized as current substance dependence or abuse, current use, or abstinence. Wh…
Association between the serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and adult unresolved attachment
Research on antecedents of organized attachment has focused on the quality of caregiving received during childhood. In recent years, research has begun to examine the influence of genetic factors on quality of infant attachment. However, no published studies report on the association between specific genetic factors and adult attachment. This study examined the link between the 5-HTTLPR promoter polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene and …
City's Racial Composition Shapes Treatment Center Characteristics and Services
We assessed the extent to which a city's racial composition shapes the characteristics of substance abuse treatment centers. We utilized both the 2004 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, which provides information on treatment center characteristics such as availability of comprehensive substance abuse evaluation, and 2000 Census data on the percentage of African Americans and Latinos in a city. We found that a city's racial co…
Perceptions of the Human Life-Span
Perceptions of aging were obtained from three age groups: adolescents, young adults, and adults. Male and female Americans and South Africans ranging in age from 15 to 40 years provided words to describe eight age decades of the human life-span. Responses were coded for positive, neutral, and negative perceptions of the eight age-stages. A repeated measures analysis of variance tested for differing patterns of responses between the age and nation…
