No short cuts
Racialized immigrant older adults (RIOAs) in Canada and other Global North countries face significant health inequities, yet remain underrepresented in health research and lack culturally appropriate health programs. While trust-building is essential for equitable community-engaged research, it requires time-intensive efforts to address cultural nuances, systemic barriers, and historical harms—often conflicting with institutional pressures for ef…

Developing a Research Agenda with Victim-Survivors to Improve Health Sector Responses to Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence in Australia
Purpose The World Health Organisation acknowledges the health sector as playing a key role in responding to those who experience and use domestic, family and sexual violence. Limited resources need to be well spent to ensure the best outcomes for victim-survivors and their families. This study was undertaken to explore : What do victim-survivors, researchers and practitioners see as the key research priorities for improving health sector response…
Effects of the Mobility-Fit Physical Activity Program on Strength and Mobility in Older Adults in Assisted Living
Physical activity programs focusing on fall prevention often overlook upper-limb strength, which is important for transferring, balance recovery, and arresting a fall. We developed and evaluated a physical activity program, Mobility-Fit for older adults in Assisted Living (AL) that includes upper-limb strengthening, agility, coordination, and balance exercises. Thirty participants (85 ± 6 years) were recruited from two AL facilities; 15 were assi…
Rapidly adapting an effective health promoting intervention for older adults—choose to move—for virtual delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic
It was feasible and acceptable to deliver CTM virtually. Programs such as CTM have potential to mitigate the unintended consequences of public health orders during COVID associated with reduced physical activity, social isolation, and loneliness. Adaptation and implementation strategies must be informed by community delivery partners and older adults themselves. Pragmatic, virtual health promoting interventions that can be adapted as contexts rap…
How central support built capacity to deliver a health‐promoting intervention for older adults in Canada
Most implementation frameworks note that a central support unit (CSU) is key to successful implementation and scale-up of evidence-based interventions (EBIs). However, few studies investigated core functions of CSUs-such as capacity building-to better understand their essential role in implementing EBIs at scale. Therefore, the aims of our study are to (1) describe the role that a CSU plays to build capacity in delivery partner organisations, to …
The impact of age and familiarity with the environment on categorical and coordinate spatial relation representations
Retrieving spatial information is a crucial everyday ability that is affected by age‐related changes. Previous research has shown that this change is mediated by familiarity with an environment. The present research uses a series of landmark location tasks to extend and deepen our understanding of the role of aging in spatial mental representations of more or less familiar environments, also disentangling the contribution of coordinate and catego…
Scaling up Action Schools! BC
Action Schools! BC (AS! BC) was scaled-up from an efficacy trial to province-wide delivery across 11 years (2004-2015). In this study we: (1) describe strategies that supported implementation and scale-up; (2) evaluate implementation (teachers' physical activity (PA) delivery) and student's PA and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) within a cluster randomized controlled trial during years 2 and 3 of scale-up; and (3) assess relationships between tea…
It makes me feel not so alone”
Health promoting interventions that focus on PA and social connectedness through group-based activities can effectively reduce social isolation and loneliness of older adults. Given the 'epidemic of loneliness' that plagues many countries currently, these kinds of interventions are timely and important. Research that further delineates mechanisms (e.g., sharing experiences vs. lectures), that modify the effect of an intervention on social connect…
Re-framing mobility in older adults
Although there is widespread acceptance regarding the importance of mobility in older adults, there have been few attempts to bridge disciplines and move beyond the predominant focus on functional aspects of mobility. In this article, we present an adapted mobility framework with the goal of continued development to acknowledge the subjective and temporal elements of movement in order to comprehensively conceptualize mobility. The adapted framewo…
Prevalence and Relationships among Physical Activity Policy, Environment, and Practices in Licensed Childcare Centers from a Manager and Staff Perspective
Physical activity (PA) is critical to early childhood health and development, and childcare is a key setting for establishing physically active play. In British Columbia (BC), a provincial standard for active play in childcare was enacted, identified here as the Active Play (AP) standard. Pragmatic constraints limit real-world data collection for evaluating policy impact. We explored whether information about policies, practices, and the environm…
Interact
INTERACT aims to advance the evidence base on population health intervention research and address challenges related to big data, knowledge mobilization and engagement, ethics, and causality. We will collect ~ 100 TB of sensor data from participants over 5 years. We will address these challenges using interdisciplinary partnerships, training of highly qualified personnel, and modern methodologies for using sensor-based data
Factors that influence implementation at scale of a community-based health promotion intervention for older adults
Even relatively simple evidence-based interventions can be challenging to scale-up and sustain. To ensure successful implementation it is essential to align with multilevel socioecological perspectives and assess the vast array of contextual factors that are at the core of better understanding successful implementation
It makes your life worthwhile. It gives you a purpose in living’
The World Health Organization claims that mobility is vital to healthy ageing and is the best guarantee of older adults being able to cope and remain in their homes and communities. Mobility enables older adults to maintain their physical health, independence and participation in society. In general, mobility is examined objectively, from a quantitative perspective where mobility is measured as physical movement ( e.g. physical activity) and/or t…
Implementation of a co-designed physical activity program for older adults
CTM adopted central tenets of implementation science that consider the complicated systems where interventions are delivered to improve public health. In this iteration of CTM we demonstrate that a partner-based health promotion intervention can be effectively implemented across settings to enhance PA, mobility and social connectedness in older adults
Developing a comprehensive measure of mobility
MOVES is a holistic measure of mobility for characterizing older adult mobility across populations. Future work should examine individual or neighborhood predictors of MOVES and its relationship to broader health outcomes. MOVES holds utility for research, surveillance, evaluation, and interventions around the broad factors influencing mobility in older adults

A mixed-methods exploration of implementation of a comprehensive school healthy eating model one year after scale-up
Objective To study the implementation of a school-based healthy eating (HE) model one year after scale-up in British Columbia (BC). Specifically, to examine implementation of Action Schools! BC (AS! BC) and its influence on implementation of classroom HE activities, and to explore factors associated with implementation. Design Diffusion of Innovations, Social Cognitive and Organizational Change theories guided our approach. We used a mixed-method…

Enhancing a Somatic Maturity Prediction Model
PURPOSE: Assessing biological maturity in studies of children is challenging. Sex-specific regression equations developed using anthropometric measures are widely used to predict somatic maturity. However, prediction accuracy was not established in external samples. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the fit of these equations, assess for overfitting (adjusting as necessary), and calibrate using external samples. METHODS: We evaluated potential overfitti…

A cross-cultural comparison of body composition, physical fitness and physical activity between regional samples of Canadian and English children and adolescents
Comparison of bone mineral content and bone mineral density between dominant and nondominant limbs in children 8–16 years of age
The bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and bone free lean tissue (BFLT) of dominant limbs were compared to nondominant values in girls and boys 8–16 years of age (girls, n = 124; boys, n = 110). Results showed that BMC, BMD, and BFLT of the dominant arm was significantly greater than of the nondominant arm ( P P
Youth's Passage through School to Work
A longitudinal analysis of sex differences in bone mineral accrual in healthy 8-19-year-old boys and girls
Although a statistical significant sex effect is observed, it is less than the error of the measurement, and thus sex difference are debatable. In general, sex difference are explained by anthropometric difference
The influence of dance training on growth and maturation of young females
Results suggest that moderate-high levels of dance training do not affect linear growth and maturation. Thus, girls should not be discouraged from dance participation on the basis of potential growth delays

Action Schools! BC — Healthy Eating
Prevention in the first place
Promoting physical activity has become a priority because of its role in preventing childhood obesity and chronic disease. Ecological approaches that recognise the interaction between individuals and the settings in which they spend their time are currently at the forefront of public health action. Schools have been identified as a key setting for health promotion. An overview of the literature addressed the promotion of physical activity in scho…
Sustained impact of community-based physical activity interventions
To sustain and maximize the impact of community-based public health interventions we propose the integration of elements from three domains of research that acknowledge the interplay between social, environmental and poilitical systems of influence. We emphasize that a number of key factors determine whether evidence from public health interventions in school and built environment settings is applied in practice and policy sectors. These include …
