Coexistence of melorheostosis and Dish in a female skeleton from Magna Graecia (Sixth Century BC)
This paper reports on a case of massive hyperostotic alterations observed in the skeleton of an adult woman from the necropolis of Montescaglioso Belvedere (Basilicata, Southern Italy) attributed to the Enotrian culture and dated to the 6th century BC. Hyperostotic changes involve joints, the vertebral column, and the lower limbs. In particular, the large flowing ossification in both the thoracic (T6–T10) and lumbar (L2–L5) tracts, the sacralizat…
Dispersion dimorphism in human populations
The aim of this paper is to verify the existence of dispersion (or variability) dimorphism in several anthropometric traits, i.e., some skeletal, muscular, and adipose dimensions, and to provide an evaluation of this scarcely considered aspect of sex differences. This research focuses on two human samples from two different European regions, Sardinia (Italy) and the Basque Country (Spain). Twenty-three anthropometric measurements were taken. A fi…

Nonalimentary tooth use in prehistory
Signs of nonalimentary tooth use were observed on the dentition of an adult male from a single burial excavated in an area close to the Uan Muhuggiag rock shelter (Tadrart Acacus, Libya), dated to more than 7800 uncalibrated years BP, that represents the most ancient human remain found in the Libyan Sahara, and provides a first glimpse of human adaptation in the early Holocene of this region. The wear pattern shows large grooves running across th…

A case of Madelung's deformity in a skeleton from Nuragic Sardinia
The case reported here refers to the skeletal remains of a mature adult male found in a collective grave known as 'Giant's tomb' located near Donori (Sardinia) and dating to the end of the Bronze Age. The skeleton showed bilateral shortening of the forearm associated to radial bowing, marked deformations at the radio-ulnar distal joints and subsequent posterior dislocation of both ulnae. The whole alterations fit well with a diagnosis of Madelung…
Nocturnal activity in the cathemeral red-fronted lemur (Eulemur fulvus rufus), with observations during a lunar eclipse
Several ecological and physiological factors have been suggested to structure circadian activity in cathemeral primates, i.e., those that are regularly active both day and night, but their relative importance remains controversial. We studied the nocturnal activity of a group of cathemeral redfronted lemurs (Eulemur fulvus rufus) in Kirindy Forest in Western Madagascar to examine its relationship with one environmental factor, ambient light level…
Univariate estimates of sexual dimorphism
The difference between male and female values of quantitative traits depends on the distribution of the variables within each sex, increasing with the rise in the difference between male and female average values and with the decrease of the dispersion of measurements in both sexes. This paper deals with the sensitivity of some widely used indices (relative difference between male and female mean values (MDI), Student's t, and the so-called Benne…

Paleoserology of the Christian population at Sayala (Lower Nubia)
A paleoserological study of human remains from the Christian cemeteries of Sayala (Lower Nubia, 6th–11th centuries A. D.) was carried out by applying two techniques (absorption‐elution and haemagglutination‐inhibition), on two types of substratum (bones and hair), in separate laboratories (Pisa and Prague). The aim of research was to evaluate the degree of repeatability of the results and the reliability of the final paleoserological diagnoses. T…
A statistical analysis of the literature on sexual dimorphism in primates
The annotated bibliography on sexual dimorphism in primates compiled by the authors was analysed considering the distribution of entries by keytitles, keywords, kind of periodicals and years of publication. A growing interest in this field was observed especially since the 1970s, but a relative scarcity of basic methodological papers was found. Articles on extant human populations and on living nonhuman primates are much more frequent than works …
Sellar Pathology in a middle Bronze Age skull from Southern Italy
This paper describes a case of an intrasellar tumour found in a male skull from Southern Italy dating from the middle Bronze Age. The sella turcica shows considerable enlargement in all diameters, erosion of the dorsum and marked depression of the floor. These features are consistent with a diagnosis of pituitary tumour, probably a non-secreting adenoma
