  • Using hierarchical clustering to identify patterns of clause combining in written Hebrew narratives

    Open Access•Gilad Brandes•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2026

Combinations of clauses are typically classified as involving coordination, complementation, relativization, or adverbial subordination. However, these categories are often criticized as overly rigid. Many advocate viewing clause combining as a continuous space defined by multiple intersecting parameters, aligning with usage-based views of grammar as fluid and emergent. Open Access•Sharon Eylon, Michal Lieberman et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2025

A translation and cultural adaption (TCA) process led to a linguistically validated and culturally adapted Hebrew version of LIMB-Q Kids. The current study applied a discourse-functional approach to a quantitative and qualitative examination of subordinate Adverbial Clauses (ACs) in Hebrew writing development. Analysis targeted narrative and expository texts, written by Hebrew speaker-writers in grades 4, 7, 11, and unive…

    Open Access•Gilad Brandes, Dorit Ravid•ARTICLE•First Language•2017

Prepositional phrases (PPs) are considered an important feature of mature written expression. However, little is known about the development of PPs during the school years. The study examined the use of PPs in 160 narrative and expository texts, written by Hebrew-users in grades 4, 7, and 11, and adults. PPs were identified, counted, and classified according to their syntactic roles. Statistical analyses were carried out to probe the effects of a…
