  • Prevalence and Correlates of Probable Depression and Anxiety Among Homeless Individuals During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Germany

Open Access•Veronika Kowalski, Andrea Hajek et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Probable depression and anxiety are highly prevalent in homeless individuals throughout. Key predictors may help to identify individuals in need and design targeted interventions

  • Immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella among homeless individuals in Germany — A nationwide multi-center cross-sectional study

Open Access•Wiebke Graf, Franziska Bertram et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: Homeless individuals suffer a high burden of vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. Moreover, they are particularly susceptible to adverse infection outcomes with limited access to the health care system. Data on the seroprevalence of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella within this cohort are missing. Methods: The seroprevalence of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella was determined within the homeless population in Germany. …

  • Breaking the digital gap to reduce cardiovascular risk in primary care

Open Access•Karla González Suitt, Klaus Püschel et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education Journal•2024

Objective: The goal of this study was to report on the development and early usability of a new interactive mHealth app for reducing cardiovascular risk in primary care patients of low socioeconomic status attending clinics in Chile. Design: Mixed-methods design with qualitative and quantitative components. Setting: Three Chilean primary care clinics located in one urban (Santiago) and two rural areas (San Clemente and Chiguayante). Each clinic s…

  • Determinants of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among homeless individuals during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Anna Brennecke, Fabian Heinrich et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2023

Overall, our study findings showed a quite high HRQoL among homeless individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Some important determinants of HRQoL were identified (e.g., age or marital status). Longitudinal studies are required to confirm our findings

  • Fear of Covid-19 among homeless individuals in Germany in mid-2021

Open Access•Andrea Hajek, Franziska Bertram et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Aims To investigate the prevalence and the correlates of fear of COVID-19 among homeless individuals. Methods We used data from the “national survey on psychiatric and somatic health of homeless individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic” (NAPSHI-study) which took place in several large cities in Germany in Mid-2021 ( n = 666 in the analytical sample). Mean age equaled 43.3 years (SD: 12.1 years), ranging from 18 to 80 years. Multiple linear regres…

  • Predictors of Loneliness among Homeless Individuals in Germany during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Katharina Dost, Fabian Heinrich et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Our study revealed a high frequency rate of loneliness among homeless individuals. The study results highlight the associations between some explanatory variables (i.e., the duration of homelessness and mental health problems). Identifying the factors associated with loneliness may help to adequately address the problems of homeless individuals at risk of loneliness. Longitudinal studies are required to confirm our findings

  • Loneliness among Homeless Individuals during the First Wave of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Franziska Bertram, Fabian Heinrich et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The feeling of loneliness is a major public health concern associated with multiple somatic and psychiatric illnesses. Studies have shown increasing incidence of loneliness in the general population during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Homeless individuals are a particularly vulnerable group; however, little is known about loneliness among homeless individuals. We therefore aimed to examine the prevalence of loneliness among homeless i…

  • Academic excellence in Latin America

Klaus Püschel, Arnoldo Riquelme et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2020

Context: Social accountability of medical schools has emerged as a standard of excellence in medical education during the last decade. However, the lack of valid and reliable instruments to estimate social accountability has limited the possibility of measuring the impact that medical schools have in society. Our aim was to develop an instrument and validate its use for assessing social accountability in Latin American countries. Methods: We used …

  • Signs of malnutrition and starvation—Reconstruction of nutritional life histories by serial isotopic analyses of hair

  • Experiences of Health and Health Care Among Women Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence

Mandi M Larsen, Julia Krohn et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2012

Through qualitative interviews with six female survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Germany, we explored their experiences with health and health care within the context of a universal access health system. Using phenomenological analysis, we learned that they view violence as a burden on health; expect health professionals to acknowledge the link between IPV and health with empathy; and experience barriers to acute mental health servi…

  • Longitudinal shrinkage in lower legs

Eilin Jopp, Inge Schröder et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2012

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We examined the final period of tibial growth in late adolescent males. METHODS: Forty-one healthy male subjects, aged 15.7 to 19.8 years participated in a study on lower leg length (LLL) growth, body height and weight increments. All subjects were measured and weighed at weekly intervals over a period of one year. Body height was determined by an anthropometer, body weight by conventional scales, and LLL was measured by a hand-h…

  • Effectiveness of a brief intervention based on the '5A' model for smoking cessation at the primary care level in Santiago, Chile

Open Access•Klaus Püschel, Beti Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2008

Chilean women have the highest smoking rates in Latin America. Prevalence in this population is about 40%. There are no national programs for smoking cessation at the primary care level. This study explores the feasibility and effectiveness of a brief counseling intervention targeted to women smokers of childbearing age who seek primary care in Santiago, Chile. A quasi-experimental design was used to compare the effect of an intervention based on…

  • Improving physical fitness and emotional well-being in adolescents of low socioeconomic status in Chile

Open Access•Marco Bonhauser, Gonzalo Fernandez et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2005

Regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality, and mortality due to cardiovascular disease and cancer. Among adolescents, physical activity is associated with benefits in the prevention and control of emotional distress, and improvement of self-esteem. Countries in transitional epidemiological scenarios, such as Chile, need to develop effective strategies to improve physical activity as a way to face the epide…
