  • Senses of place, senses of time and heritage

Gregory Ashworth, Gregory John Ashworth et al.•CHAPTER•Museum Studies Approach to Heritage•2018

Senses of places are the products of the creative imagination of the individual and of society, while identities are not passively received but are ascribed to places by people. Senses of place must be related to senses of time if only because places are in a continuous state of becoming. The key linkage in this process is heritage. Heritage is one fundamental element in the shaping of these power networks and in elaborating this 'identifiable bu…

  • Senses of Place

Gregory Ashworth, Gregory John Ashworth et al.•BOOK•Senses of Place•2017•Citada por: 21

Bringing together case studies from Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany and Mexico, this book examines the link between senses of place and senses of time. It suggests that not only do place identities change through time, but imagined pasts also provide resources which the present selects and packages for its own contemporary purposes and for forwarding to imagined futures. The reasons behind the creation of place image are also explored, …

  • A Geography of Heritage

Brian Graham, Greg Ashworth et al.•BOOK•A Geography of Heritage•2016

The concept of heritage relates to the ways in which contemporary society uses the past as a social, political or economic resource. However, heritage is open to interpretation and its value may be perceived from differing perspectives - often reflecting divisions in society. Moreover, the schism between the cultural and economic uses of heritage also gives rise to potential conflicts of interest. Examining these issues in depth, this book is the…

  • Building A New Heritage (RLE Tourism)

    P J Larkham, Gregory Ashworth et al.•BOOK•Building a New Heritage (RLE…•2013

At the heart of the European debate lies the tension between the idea of European unity and individual state identities and nationalisms. This volume provides an insight into this dichotomy by exploring the role of heritage in the new Europe. The main theme of this book is that a number of possible heritages can be shaped from the European past depending on the purposes for which they are intended. Through different methods of management interven…

  • Colonial Heritage in Paramaribo, Suriname

Open Access•Eugenio Van Maanen, Gregory Ashworth•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2013•Referencias: 5

In this article, the preservation of the monumental built environment from the colonial period is related to and discussed within the perspective of heritage ownership. It contributes to a debate in which heritage resource preservation is approached and connected to several heritage ownership issues. It argues that an effective built environmental preservation policy for colonial heritage is strongly related to and dependent on issues such as leg…

  • Preservation, Conservation and Heritage

    Gregory Ashworth•ARTICLE•Asian Anthropology•2011•Citada por: 24•Referencias: 6

The task of this article is first to establish that there are quite different ways of viewing the past from the present and that these approaches or paradigms have arisen for different reasons and have evolved through time. The successive introduction of what are labeled here as the preservation, conservation and heritage paradigms did not lead, as in most other academic pursuits, to the replacement of one paradigm by another, but to a parallel c…

  • Town walls, walled towns and tourism

Gregory Ashworth, David Bruce•ARTICLE•Journal of Heritage Tourism•2009•Referencias: 5

The paradoxical relationship between tourists and town walls is examined in the wider context of the walled town tourism. Such towns may be paradigm cases for historic towns as attractions for heritage, urban and cultural tourism among the ‘flows and scapes’ of delocated global tourism. Widely distributed across the ‘old’ world and extant even in the ‘new’, town walls can be seen as the grim barriers between contested identities or as the emblems…

Angela Ashworth, Gregory Ashworth•ARTICLE•International Journal of Heritage…•1998•Referencias: 2

The publication of Frank McCourt's autobiographical novel, Angela's Ashes in 1996 has sharply focused attention upon a sense of place and heritage identity of the Irish town of Limerick. It has both bolstered a local civic self‐conscious identity and spawned ‘McCourt tourism’. On the other hand it has provoked local controversy by revealing the existence of a number of hitherto largely concealed heritage dissonances. The historical vision of the …

Gregory Ashworth, Gregory J Ashworth•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•1983

Dutch geography degree courses like those in Britain are committed to fieldwork, which is now usually based on student data collection exercises. Some issues raised by such exercises are considered. The accuracy of the data collected by students was monitored in a study of commercial activities in Perpignan in 1981–2 with data available from official lists. The causes of error, and some lessons relevant to future fieldwork, are examined
