Sedimentological and stratigraphic observations in El Mirón, a late Quaternary cave site in the Cantabrian Cordillera, Northern Spain
El Mirón cave on the northern edge of the Cantabrian Cordillera is one of the first montane sites in this area to be the object of modern interdisciplinary research. Five excavation seasons have revealed an archaeological sequence attributable to the Medieval, Bronze, Chalcolithic, Neolithic, Mesolithic, Azilian, Magdalenian, and Solutrean periods, and early Upper and Middle Paleolithic levels have just been reached. Forty‐four radiocarbon ages r…

Sediments and stratigraphy in rockshelters and caves
Over the last half century the study of rockshelter and cave sediments has evolved from straightforward descriptive analysis to sophisticated examination on several scales—from field observations to bulk laboratory analyses to microscopic examination. Still an integrated theory to guide the interpretation of these analyses does not exist, in part because of the idiosyncratic nature of individual caves and rockshelters. This paper reviews studies …

ers. The potential links between these features of Aurignacian adaptations and the emergence of complex symbolic behavior are touched upon, but in the end are perhaps wisely left as an open question. Absent a detailed consideration of these broader links, however, there is little to suggest that the organization of Aurignacian subsistence behavior and stone raw material utilization were somehow

History of the sedimentary infilling of Yarimburgaz Cave, Turkey
Yarimburgaz is a double cave with slightly offset upper and lower entrance chambers, connected laterally inside the cave. Below Byzantine and modern debris, the upper cave encloses Chalcolithic to Upper Paleolithic occupations above a beach sand attributed to the Last Interglacial. Below the beach sand, strongly modified sediments contain sparse Lower Paleolithic artifacts. The lower cave preserves only Lower Paleolithic industries, but with abun…
Chapitre 2.

Paleoecology at La Riera (Asturias, Spain) [and Comments and Reply]
Excavations were conducted at La Riera to test hypotheses concerning variability among Upper Paleolithic/Mesolithic artifact assemblages and to define and begin to explain changing hunter-gatherer adaptations to the coastal region at the end of the Wurm and the beginning of the Holocene. The 36 strata contain assemblages that can be assigned to Aurignacian(?), Solutrean, Magdalenian, Azilian, and Asturian culture-stratigraphic units. However, the…

Greatlakean Substage
New evidence from recent field and seismic investigations in the Lake Michigan basin and in the type areas of the Valders, Two Creeks and Two Rivers deposits necessitates revision of late-glacial ice-front positions, rock- and time-stratigraphic nomenclature and climatic interpretations and deglaciation patterns for the period ca. 14,000–7,000 radiocarbon years B.P. The previously reported and long accepted pattern of deglaciation for the Lake Mi…
New excavations at the Tabun cave, Mount Carmel, Israel, 1967-1972

An Archaeological Investigation on the Loboi Plain, Baringo District, Kenya
In 1973, researchers from the University of Michigan conducted a survey in the Loboi area, north of Lake Bogoria (Lake Hannington) in west Kenya, north of Nairobi. The goal of the project was to record archaeological remains in the area. In 1965, Mary Leakey had noted the presence of stone tools and faunal remains in Loboi, and her son Richard Leakey, director of the National Museums of Kenya, suggested the area should be further studied. In addi…

Sediment Analysis of a Prehistoric Rockshelter
Rockshelter and cave-mouth deposits accumulate in specialized niches through the breakdown of the enclosing bedrock, the addition of windblown and fluvial sediment and, in the case of prehistoric sites, human habitation debris. Certain modifications of routine sediment analysis are necessary in order to realize the full potential of paleoenvironmental interpretation. These sediments are coarse, necessitating the collection of large samples, commo…
