  • Bark pitch in the Early Neolithic of Central Europe

Open Access•Nadezhda Kotova, Peter Stadler et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2021•Citada por: 1

The Linear Pottery people in 5670-5000 BC at the Brunn sites in Austria produced birch and beech bark pitches. Big globular vessels and closed high bowls could have been containers for the production and storage of this substance. Miniature vessels with a handle for hanging had contained small portions. Bark pitch as an adhesive for the repair of pottery and in the construction of big idols is also testified, as is the application of this materia…

  • Update on the Absolute Chronology of the Migration period in Central Europe (375–568 AD)

Open Access•Jakub Kaizer, Eva Maria Wild et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

The Danube region in Central Europe was one of the areas where several cultures appeared before moving further or being defeated during the Migration Period in the middle of the first millennium AD. The Lombards, who crossed the Danube in 505 AD, settled in the “Tullnerfeld” where the Maria Ponsee graveyard was excavated in 1965–1972. From the historical evidence about the temporal and spatial migration of the Lombards, it was concluded that the …

  • The Chronology of Tell El-Daba

Open Access•Walter Kutschera, Manfred Bietak et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2012•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 34

Radiocarbon dating at the Tell el-Daba site in the Nile Delta has created an enigma for many years. Despite great efforts, the difference of about 120 yr between the chronology based on 14 C dates and the one based on archaeological evidence linked to the Egyptian historical chronology has not been solved. In order to foster open discussions on this discrepancy, we present here the results of 40 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measuremen…

  • A Pipeline for Computational Historical Linguistics

Lydia Steiner, Michael Cysouw et al.•ARTICLE•Language Dynamics and Change•2011

There are many parallels between historical linguistics and molecular phylogenetics. In this paper we describe an algorithmic pipeline that mimics, as closely as possible, the traditional workflow of language reconstruction known as the comparative method. The pipeline consists of suitably modified algorithms based on recent research in bioinformatics, which are adapted to the specifics of linguistic data. This approach can alleviate much of the …

  • Avar Chronology Revisited, And The Question Of Ethnicity In The Avar Qaganate

Peter Stadler•CHAPTER•The Other Europe in the Middle Ages•2008

The end of the Avar qaganate, an event historians place in the early 800s, has been dated by various archaeologists at various points in time between 800 and 900. While absolute dates for the chronology of the Avar age remain under discussion, great progress has been achieved in establishing a relative chronology of archaeological assemblages, especially for the later parts of the Avar age for which no coin-dated assemblages have so far been foun…

    Open Access•Eva Maria Wild, Christine Neugebauer-Maresch et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2008•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 8

The open-air archaeological site at Krems-Hundssteig is a well-known Upper Paleolithic site located in Lower Austria. The site was discovered in the late 19th/early 20th centuries when a large number of archaeological remains were collected during the course of loess quarrying. Although no systematic excavation has ever been performed, Krems-Hundssteig has been described since its discovery as typical of the Aurignacian period in this region base…

    Open Access•Peter Stadler•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2005•Citada por: 5

The early Neolithic sites I to V from Brunn Wolfholz, south of Vienna, were excavated between 1989 and 2005. Till now about 75 longhouses, with the standardized size of 20x7 m have been recognized. The whole settlement has a length from North to South of 850 m and from East to West of 500 m. The oldest part is site IIa in the south; it contains rough ceramics with plastic ornaments, which seem to be in a Starčevo tradition. The Early Linear Ceram…

The Neolithic site of Schletz in Lower Austria comprises a fortified settlement from the end of the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) culture. Large numbers of human bones were found at the base of the fortification ditches, and many of the excavated bones and skulls showed evidence of trauma which most likely originates from violence. This remarkable deposit of human remains has been considered evidence for an abrupt end to the Early Neolithic settlement …

The Baden Culture is a widely spread culture of the Young Neolithics in east-central Europe. In southeast Europe, several parallel cultures are found at different places. The main innovations in east-central Europe associated with the Baden Culture were traditionally thought to originate in southeast Europe, Anatolia, and the Levant. However, in recent years, doubt about this theory has arisen among archaeologists. Here, we try to contribute to t…

  • Multicultural Schools and Monocultural Teaching Staff

Despite all the measures that have been taken with the intention of integrating children and youths of different cultures, their situation at schools has failed to improve. On the contrary, fewer students are successfully advancing to higher levels of education. Consequently, the number of students entering higher institutions for teacher training is also declining. This results in a situation whereby an increasingly homogeneous teaching staff fa…

    Peter Stadler•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•1991

Pestalozzi is one of the contemporaries of the Revolution who were scarcely surprised by its outbreak.’ True, authentic testimonies from the beginning are missing. Yet the subject of decline and dissolution of the State’s system had accompanied him since his youth, when he denounced the depravity of late Sparta, while showing the Zurich of his time to the eyes of the reader. But he also had dealt critically with France of the later Ancien Regime,…
