  • Integration of mental health and HIV service delivery in low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Hiroshi Azuma, Ping Teresa Yeh et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2025

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and mental health have complex, bidirectional impacts. Integrated service delivery, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where resources are most limited and the burden of HIV is heaviest, may help to improve both HIV and mental health outcomes. While the integration of mental health and HIV services has been studied in various settings, previous reviews on this topic have primarily focused on …

  • Attachment and Amae

    Open Access•Fred Rothbaum, Miki Kakinuma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2007•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 25

Attachment investigators provide evidence that security takes similar forms and has similar antecedents and consequences in diverse cultures. However, there is also evidence that security differs across culture, and the nature of the similarities and differences are not well understood. A total of 39 mothers from the United States and 32 mothers from Japan were interviewed to assess beliefs about attachment and amae (expectations of indulgence an…

  • The Development of Close Relationships in Japan and the United States

Open Access•Fred Rothbaum, Martha Pott et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2000

Findings from research on parent – child and adult mate relationships suggest that there are different paths of development in Japan and the United States. In Japan, the path is one of symbiotic harmony, as seen in the emphasis on union in infancy, others' expectations in childhood, the stability of relationships with parents and peers in adolescence, and assurance about the mate relationship in adulthood. In the United States, the path is one of…

  • Functional analysis of the contents of maternal speech to infants of 5 and 13 months in four cultures

    Marc H Bornstein, Joseph Tal et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1992•Citada por: 17•Referencias: 6

Maternal speech to infants of 2 ages in 4 cultures was examined to probe how infant age and cultural variation influence the contents of that speech. Argentine, French, Japanese, and U.S. American mothers were individually videotaped in naturalistic free-play interactions at home with their 5- and 13-month-old infants, maternal speech was transcribed, and the contents classified as affect salient or information salient

  • Cultural Support for Schooling

    Open Access•Robert D Hess, Hiroshi Azuma•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1991•Citada por: 39•Referencias: 11

Conditions that confront students in formal schooling–instruction in groups, sharing teacher's attention, working independently, dealing with arbitrary rules regulating behavior–are not conducive to learning. Teachers deal with these circumstances by encouraging facilitative dispositions in students or by making learning events more appealing. Cultures differ in the emphasis they place on these two strategies. Japanese tend to stress developing a…

  • Descriptors for an intelligent person

Hiroshi Azuma, Keiko Kashiwagi•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1987

The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of intelligence among Japanese. Male and female college students, and mothers of female students were asked to think of an intelligent person, and to rate each of 67 descriptors according to whether it fits that person or not. It was found out that some of the descriptors were highly general regardless of the background of the person to be described, and that some were specific to the sex and o…

  • Japan-US comparative study on early maternal influences upon cognitive development

Keiko Kashiwagi, Hiroshi Azuma et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1984

This is a comparative study on the follow-up samples of Japan-US cross-cultural project concerning maternal influences upon the cognitive development of children. In order to compare the longitudinal generazability of our findings from preschool data, several cognitive measures assesed at 11:0 (Japan) or 12:0 (U.S.) were examined in relation to preschool measures and to early maternal variables. The level of performances were moderately stable th…

  • Early maternal influences upon later cognitive development among Japanese children

Keiko Kashiwagi, Hiroshi Azuma et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1982

This is a follow-up study on the Japanese sample of Japan-US cross-national project concerning the maternal influence upon the cognitive development in pre-school years. In order to test the longitudinal generalizability of the findings from our pre-school study, IQ and school achievement scores were assessed at age 11: 0 for 44 out of 58 Japanese sample, and were examined in relation to pre-school cognitive measures and to early maternal factors…

  • Maternal Strategies for Regulating Children's Behavior

Open Access•Mary Conroy, Mary Alice Conroy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1980•Citada por: 23•Referencias: 6

The strategies that Japanese and American mothers use to gain compliance from young children were compared. Six hypothetical compliance-relevant situations were described to 58 Japanese and 67 American mothers. Their responses were scored for the rationale or cognitive structure they offered as a basis for compliance and the flexibility or psychological space evident in their negotiations with the child. Japanese mothers were more likely to utili…

  • A Cross -National Comparison of Cognitive Conflict

    Open Access•Berndt Brehmer, Hiroshi Azuma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1970•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

The results of 5 "lens model" interpersonal conflict (IPC) experiments, carried out in 5 countries: Czechoslovakia, Greece, Japan, Sweden and the U. S. were compared. Replicating earlier intranational findings, conflict reduction was found to be very slow. Although the subjects reduced the differences between their policies to a considerable extent, the consistency of their policies was also reduced, preventing the subjects from deriving the full…

  • The Structure of Cue-Criterion Relationship and the Detectability of a Cue

Hiroshi Azuma, TAKAKO OCHIAI•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1966

Two types of cue-criterion relationships were differentiated. They were the probabilistic structure in which the cue hits the criterion value at a given percentage and the covarying structure in which the cue values have significant regression upon the criterion value. These two structures were compared with regard to the detectability of cues in a task of detecting and utilizing the relevant cue, the payoff for correct utilization being controle…
