In this paper I use the Bakhtinian concept of the ‘chronotope’ to investigate the ways in which a matrilineal narrative affects the space/time structures of some recent women's fiction. The intersection of feminism and matrilinealism produces particular kinds of structures: in feminist matrilineal narratives, there are often two time‐frames going on at once. There is a synchronic, horizontal plane, on which the generations of women are united by …
