  • Cortical Bone Loss in Barcelona Across Time (1st Century CE –18th Century CE ) and Its Potential Relationship With Linear Enamel Hypoplasia

  • Diachronic shifts in biological parameters from prehistory to modernity in Barcelona

    Open Access•Antony Cevallos, Carme Rissech•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

The present study analyzes the biological parameters of life expectancy at birth (LE), stature (ST), body mass (BM), and body mass index (BMI) in the population of Barcelona from Prehistory through to the Modern period. The objective is to assess whether these biological parameters exhibit measurable diachronic shifts corresponding to sociocultural and environmental change. Skeletal remains were analyzed using standard anthropological methods. Se…

  • An Ultradolichocephaly in a Knight of the Order of Calatrava from the Castle of Zorita de los Canes (Guadalajara, Spain) Dated Between the 13th and 15th Centuries

Open Access•Carme Rissech, Oscar Creo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025

This study presents a paleopathological analysis of individual T4.2 from the archaeological site of the castle of Zorita de los Canes (Guadalajara, Spain). The individual exhibits ultradolichocephaly and was dated between the 13th and 15th centuries. Based on the context, the individual could have been a member of the military–religious Order of Calatrava. Standard bioanthropological and paleopathological methods were applied. The results indicat…

  • Skeletal remains of human perinatal individuals from the fortified Iberian Period settlement of Ca n'Oliver (6th century to 50 years BCE)

    Open Access•Carme Rissech, Carsten Witzel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 85

Burial customs in the Iberian Period (Iron Age II) included cremation. Only perinatal and newborn infants were buried directly beneath floor settlement. These infants represent the very few unburned human remains recovered from Iberian sites. The interpretation of these infant burials is in debate, focusing on whether they are unnatural or natural deaths. Our aim is to infer mortality patterns and developmental conditions of these individuals, in…

  • Pathological and sub-pathological changes in European rabbit bones

    Open Access•L Lloveras, Richard M Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Referencias: 4

To provide prevalence data for future comparative analysis of the health status of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) accumulated in the archaeological record. Two contrasting assemblages were analysed for pathological and sub-pathological changes: 1) an assemblage of domestic modern rabbit bones; and 2) a non-anthropogenic accumulation of archaeological rabbit remains. The lesions observed macroscopically, under magnification, and radiographically …

  • The acetabulum as an adult age marker and the new Idade2 (the Idade2 web page)

Open Access•Carme Rissech, Allysha Winburn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Referencias: 17

OBJECTIVE: In 2006, an age estimation method was proposed utilizing Bayesian inference to interpret age-progressive changes in the acetabulum. This was accompanied by the IDADE2 software to facilitate calculations. However, the MS-DOS operating system on which the software was based became obsolete. The main goal of this article is to present the new IDADE2, which incorporates web-based facilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The original IDADE2 has b…

  • Isotopic reconstruction of human diet at the Roman site (1st-4th c. AD) of Carrer Ample 1, Barcelona, Spain

  • Ontogeny of the male femur

Open Access•Aniol Pujol, Carme Rissech et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2016•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 101

OBJECTIVE: To describe the morphological changes of the male femur during the adolescent growth spurt and to compare the pattern obtained with that reported previously for females. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred and forty males from a Spanish population aged between 9 and 16 years were analysed, based on telemetries. Size and shape variation of the femur was quantified by 22 2D-landmarks and analysed using geometric morphometric methods. Likew…

  • Sexual dimorphism of the pelvic girdle from 3D images of a living Spanish sample from Castilla-La Mancha

Open Access•Carlos Crespo, Carme Rissech et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2015

  • A geometric morphometric analysis of acetabular shape of the primate hip joint in relation to locomotor behaviour

    Open Access•Marta San Millán, Marta San‐Millán et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2015•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 121

  • A Roman Skeleton with Possible Treponematosis in the North-East of the Iberian Peninsula

    Open Access•Carme Rissech, Charlotte A Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 39

The main goal of this paper is to describe and discuss pathological lesions observed in a Roman skeleton (between 2nd and 3rd century AD) from the north-east region of the Iberian Peninsula (St Nicasi 18-24 site. Gavà, Barcelona), which may be compatible with treponematosis. Most of the skeleton, with the exception of the neurocranium, was recovered. Only the left tibia was affected, whereas the rest of the recovered skeletal remains were unaffec…

  • A test of Suchey–Brooks (pubic symphysis) and Buckberry–Chamberlain (auricular surface) methods on an identified Spanish sample

  • The demographic, socio-economic and temporal contextualisation of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona collection of identified human skeletons (UAB collection)

    Open Access•Carme Rissech, Dawnie Wolfe Steadman•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 31

Identified human skeletal collections are those in which basic demographic data (sex, age and biological origin) are known and are crucial for developing and testing osteological methodologies. It is important that the identified collection be contextualised, and in this way the collection will be considered a reference collection. To contextualise a collection requires documentation of the basic demographic data of the individuals (sex, age, yea…

  • Scapular development from the neonatal period to skeletal maturity

    Open Access•Carme Rissech, Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 28

An understanding of the basic growth rates and patterns of development for each element of the human skeleton is important for a thorough understanding and interpretation of data in all areas of skeletal research. Yet surprisingly little is known about the detailed ontogenetic development of many bones, including the scapula. With the intention of describing the changes that accompany postnatal ontogeny in the scapula and algorithms to predict su…
