This thematic issue addresses the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples in protecting their rights and maintaining their unique cultures and ways of life. • Understanding disability policy

    Open Access•Alan Roulstone, Simon Prideaux•BOOK•Understanding Disability Policy•2012

In an era of scarce social resources the question of the changing social policy constructions and responses to disabled people has become increasingly important. Paradoxically, some disabled people are realising new freedoms and choices never before envisioned, whilst others are prey to major retractions in public services and aggressive attempts to redefine who counts as 'genuinely disabled'. Understanding Disability Policy locates disability po…

  • Disabled people and self‐directed support schemes

    Simon Prideaux, Alan Roulstone et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2009•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 10

This article critically explores and adds to research on the social benefits of self‐directed support schemes for disabled people and their families. We argue that, although research to date has defined the benefits of such services within conventional ‘cost–benefit’ frameworks, this approach has failed to address the more significant challenge to traditional models of welfare and, particularly, the role of users of these schemes as employers. Th…

  • More policies, greater inclusion? Exploring the contradictions of New Labour inclusive education policy

    Alan Roulstone, Simon Prideaux•ARTICLE•International Studies in…•2008•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 3

The era of New Labour government has witnessed unprecedented growth in inclusive education policies. There is, however, limited evidence that policies have increased disabled children’s inclusion. This article explores reasons for this contradiction. Drawing on sociological insights, it is argued that New Labour policies on inclusive education take their cues from wider neo‐liberal constructions of social exclusion; ideas that point to the person…

  • Not So New Labour

    Open Access•Simon Prideaux•BOOK•Not So New Labour•2005

New Labour has concentrated many of its social policy initiatives in reinvigorating the family, community and work. But just how 'new' are the ideas driving policy and practice? This book shows how New Labour has drawn on the ideas and premises of functionalism, which dominated British and American sociological thought from the 1940s to the 1960s.

  • John Macmurray and the‘Forgotten’Lessons on Capitalism and Community

    Open Access•Simon Prideaux•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2005•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

Tony Blair has made no secret of his admiration for the philosophical works of John Macmurray. This article shows that Blair recognises Macmurray's contribution to the understanding of the individual in society. Blair readily acknowledges Macmurray's overriding desire for philosophy to place individuals in their rightful social setting. Yet Blair views this philosophical shift as a reinforcement of modern notions of community that emphasise an ob…

  • From Organisational Theory to the New Communitarianism of Amitai Etzioni

    Open Access•Simon Prideaux•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•2002•Citada por: 1

Introduction Across a wide range of social commentators and social disciplines there has been little doubt that thoughts and sentiments of Amitai Etzioni have influenced a communitarian attempt to establish a new moral order within which modern society should develop. Ruth Levitas (1998), to name but one, points to characteristic centrality Etzioni gives to family as well as to community. On another level, Finn Bowring (1997) draws upon Etzioni's…

  • New Labour, Old Functionalism

    Open Access•Simon Prideaux•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Administration•2001•Citada por: 6

Through references to Hansard, official papers, Fabian pamphlets and pertinent texts from the fields of politics, sociology and social policy, this piece illustrates the similarities of thought behind the deliberations of New Labour and those of the early American functionalists and their modern‐day counterparts. Examination of the rhetoric used by both parties shows that there are three main focal points of comparison. On one level there is a sh…
