The role of religious faith in dental pathological lesion patterning and approaches to care in a medieval Portuguese assemblage
The European middle ages (c.500–1500 CE) is often seen as a period of poor oral health and hygiene, as evidenced through artistic, textual, or popular media portrayals. Anthropological analyses have the unique potential to illuminate what medieval mouths were actually like through direct examination of dental and skeletal tissues themselves. In doing so, we can not only document the variability of dental diseases, but also how medieval communitie…
Taphonomic Trajectories
Behind the veil
Archaeothanatology has helped immensely to better understand complex burial dynamics and funerary treatment. Recently, scholars have employed this approach in attempts to reconstruct possible shrouding of corpses prior to interment, which often degrade entirely. This approach can potentially reveal funerary evidence of burial containers despite their archaeological absence. We employ a similar approach to test the possible employment of burial sh…
Environmental attitudes and behaviour of birdwatchers
Birdwatching is one of the fastest growing sectors of ecotourism. Managing this nature-based activity requires understanding birdwatchers’ attitudes and behaviour towards the natural environment. This paper proposes assessing these attitudes and the link to behavioural intentions by combining the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) with a criterion-based segmentation method, the chi-squared automatic interaction detector (CHAID). This methodology wa…
Atypical dental wear patterns in individuals exhumed from a medieval Islamic necropolis of Santarém (Portugal)
To infer the diet and cultural behaviours of Islamic communities during the medieval period in Portugal, 43 adult skeletons (13 females, 27 males, and 3 individuals of undetermined sex) from the medieval Islamic necropolis of Santarém were analysed. A total of 779 teeth were macroscopically observed to score dental wear and dental alterations as enamel chipping, notching, transversal grooves observed on the mesiodistal occlusal surfaces (TGMOS), …
Linear and appositional growth in children as indicators of social and economic change during the Medieval Islamic to Christian transition in Santarém, Portugal
This study explores whether child growth has signalled periods of social change between the Medieval Islamic and post-Islamic Christian Periods in Santarém, Portugal. The social change is associated with the Christian conquest of Iberia and the fall of the Islamic Empire in Europe, which ceased the regional influence of the Golden Age of Islam. This may have caused a deterioration in living conditions brought by the Christian conquest, compared w…
A novel approach
Paleopathological and paleoparasitological studies seek evidences to understand health and disease in past populations. These two approaches are often used independently despite the obvious importance of its complementary. This paper aims to explore the possible relation between a common indicator of childhood stress and infection by intestinal parasites. Thirty adult individuals from the Islamic necropolis of Santarém (9th-12th cent. AD) were ma…
