  • The secular trend in body proportion changes among Japanese adolescents using a body proportion chart method

    Open Access•Komei Hattori, Toshie Hirohara•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2019•Referencias: 15

  • Age change of power in weight/height p indices used as indicators of adiposity in japanese

Open Access•Komei Hattori, Toshie Hirohara•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2002

Data from the Statistical Report on School Health and Hygiene were used to identify the entire process of the power of height p in the weight-for-height index W/H(p). The appropriate power of height p was determined by clarifying the allometric relationship, giving an index of relative weight, which is highly correlated with weight but uncorrelated with height for age. The procedure is equivalent to fitting a straight line on a log-log scale to t…

  • Hierarchical differences in body composition of professional Sumo wrestlers

Open Access•Komei Hattori, Masakatsu Kondo et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1999

The body composition of 36 professional Sumo wrestlers and 39 collegiate male students were assessed densitometrically. The means of body weight, BMI and %fat for Sumo wrestlers were 117.1 kg, 36.5 and 26.2%, extraordinarily large compared with untrained men (p < 0.001). Results of the analysis of variance of divisions of Sumo wrestlers revealed significant differences in body weight, fat-free mass, fat mass, BMI, fat-free mass index (FFM/height2…

  • Assessment of body composition by using a new chart method

Open Access•Komei Hattori, Nobunao Tatsumi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1997

The body mass index (BMI, weight/height2), is commonly used as a simple and valid way of assessing body composition. However, the significance of the BMI is not clear, since body mass is composed of two main components: fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM), each with different densities. In order to graphically present body composition as a quantitative measure, a chart based on the fat-free mass index (FFMI, FFM/height2) and fat mass index (FMI…

  • Determination of body volume in normal adults and in patients with cerebral palsy by the sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) dilution technique

This study sought to establish body volume measurement by the sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) dilution technique and to assess the body composition of healthy subjects and patients with the complications of cerebral palsy and mental retardation. Sixty‐six healthy males and females ranging in age from 18 to 41 years and 10 patients with the complications ranging in age from 23 to 34 years participated in the study. The SF 6 dilution method determines …

  • Is the Pair-wise Contrast of Fatfolds Significant in Determining Body Composition

    Open Access•Komei Hattori•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1994

Regional variability of skinfold thickness differs from individual to individual. This may be affected by differences in total body composition. If so, individual's fat distribution patterns may contribute to the prediction of body composition. On this premise, the regression relationships between body composition and fat distribution patterns which is represented by the pair-wise contrast of fatfolds, were analyzed by the quantification method o…

  • Validity of Bioelectrical Impedance Equations for Estimating Fat-free Mass in Japanese Males

    Open Access•Komei Hattori, Manami Ito•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1994

The present study validated the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method for estimating fat-free mass (FFM). Forty-five male university students served as subjects. Four equations that have been recently proposed for predicting FFM from resistance by BIA and anthropometrical indicators were compared with values obtained from underwater weighing. Cross validation analyses included examination of the constant error (CE), standard error of esti…

  • Fat patterning of adolescents

Open Access•M Daniel Becque, Komei Hattori et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1992

The relationship between fatfold thickness and fat mass of 101 male and 66 female adolescents (10–16 yr) was examined with the allometric equation y = bx a . Body composition was assessed by underwater weighing and 5 fatfolds were measured: triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, abdominal, and thigh. Percent body fat ranged from 4.9% to 56.1%. The log of each fatfold thickness was plotted versus the log of fat mass. All the relationships were linear a…

  • Application of the DLT method to anthropometry

    Open Access•Komei Hattori•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1991

The direct linear transformation (DLT) method was applied as a tool in the field of anthropometry. Using four video cameras which are arranged surrounding the subjects, we attempted to detect the reference points in the trunk of body and produce three dimensional coordinates of the points by the DLT method. The average error associated with the x, y, and z coordinates was less than 1%. After getting the three dimensional coordinates of reference …

  • Body Composition and Lean Body Mass Index for Japanese College Students

    Open Access•Komei Hattori•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1991

Lean body mass (LBM) and fat mass (FM) are two major components of body composition and when totalled equal body mass. Body mass index (BMI) as represented by weight/height2, has proven to be both a simple and valid way of assessing body composition. However, the significance of the index is not clear since body weight is composed of two main components: LBM and FM, each of whose densities show distinct differences. In order to present the body co…

  • Subcutaneous fat distribution pattern in Japanese young adults

    Open Access•Komei Hattori•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1987

  • Fat patterning of adolescents

Open Access•Komei Hattori, M Daniel Becque et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

Fat patterning of 110 adolescent males and 80 adolescent females was determined by principal components analysis of five skinfolds (triceps, subscaplular, iliac, abdominal and thigh). Densiometrically determined body fatness was employed to create two groups: obese (greater than 30% fat) and non-obese (less than 30% fat). Three fat patterning components emerged: trunk-extremity, upper-lower trunk and medial-lateral abdomen. The first two componen…

  • Tubular hand bone growth during the latter half of the prenatal period

    Open Access•Komei Hattori•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1986•Referencias: 15

The growth of the 19 tubular hand bones from fetal months 5 to 9 was studied by the allometric method. The hand bones were carefully dissected under a low power stereoscopic microscope. The length and breadth of all bones was found to be monophasic in relation to crown‐rump length. In general, maximum bone and ossified shaft lengths in the same row group demonstrate similar allometric coefficients. The specific growth rate of ossified shaft lengt…

Fatness and fat patterning of 27 male and 33 female obese adolescents were identified by principal‐components analysis of five skinfolds (triceps, subscapular, iliac, abdominal, and thigh). Correlations were computed between the component scores, based on the eigen vectors, and anthropometric and physiological variables. Overall fatness, component I, was highly correlated with all anthropometric and body composition variables. Also, component I s…

  • Age Change of Allometry Coefficients in Japanese

    Open Access•Komei Hattori•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1975

Though allometry formula (y=bxα) is not influenced directly by the age, character of the age group sampled is predicted to be reflected on allometry coefficient. So the age changes of the allometry coefficient of body weight, chest girth and sitting height against stature were analyzed on the both sexes from 6 to 14 year-old. As allometry coefficients in each age were various even within the same stature class and show directional changes with ag…

  • Studies on the Relative Variation of Chest Dimension at 18 Years Old

Open Access•SHIGERU MORITA, Komei Hattori et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1971
