  • The shipping losses of the British East India Company, 1750–1813

    Open Access•H V Bowen•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2020•Citada por: 1

This article establishes and examines the shipping losses of the British East India Company between the middle of the eighteenth century and 1813 when it lost its trade monopoly with India. This was the most important period in the history of the East India Company because it greatly expanded its trade with India and China and established what became a very large territorial empire on the subcontinent. It was also a time when Britain was often at…

  • Military Entrepreneurs and the Spanish Contractor State in the Eighteenth Century, by Rafael Torres Sánchez

    Open Access•H V Bowen•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2018

For more than a decade, historians have been exploring European ‘contractor states’ which co-existed alongside, and interacted with, the ‘fiscal-military states’ which raised men and money for the fighting of war during the long eighteenth century. This book belongs in this recent tradition, and indeed, together with Agustin González Enciso, its author was a prime mover behind the establishment of the international Contractor State Research Group…

  • The East India Company and the island of Johanna (Anjouan) during the long eighteenth century

    Open Access•H V Bowen•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2018•Citada por: 2

For just over 230 years the East India Company’s maritime operations were supported by a far-flung network of islands, ports and watering points across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These places provided supplies to company ships and safe havens in times of danger. The island of Johanna, or Anjouan, in the Mozambique Channel was one such place and this article considers how it came to be a key component within the company’s maritime system. The…

  • British Exports of Raw Cotton from India to China during the Late Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Centuries

    Open Access•H V Bowen•CHAPTER•How India Clothed the World•2013

In the five decades or so after 1760, but especially in the years after 1785, exports of raw cotton from British India to China increased to such an extent that in 1805 consignments amounting to an unprecedented 55.3 million lbs were shipped into the southern port city of Canton. After the conquest of Bengal and the acquisition of extensive tax revenues between 1757 and 1765, the export of raw cotton to China increasingly came to be regarded as c…

  • Britain's Oceanic Empire

Open Access•H V Bowen, Elizabeth Mancke et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Britain's Oceanic Empire•2012

This pioneering comparative study of British imperialism in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds draws on the perspectives of British newcomers overseas and their native hosts, metropolitan officials and corporate enterprises, migrants and settlers. Leading scholars examine the divergences and commonalities in the legal and economic regimes that allowed Britain to project imperium across the globe. They explore the nature of sovereignty and law, …

  • Bullion for Trade, War, and Debt-Relief

    Open Access•H V Bowen•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2010•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 7

This paper provides the first detailed assessment of British exports of silver to Asia during the initial phase of imperial expansion in India. It demonstrates that, contrary to the views of some historians, exports of silver were at times very considerable, notably after 1785, when they were used to fund war and debt-relief in India, as well as for trade. Focus is on the East India Company, but attention is paid to private exports, to British tr…

The Business of Empire assesses the domestic impact of British imperial expansion by analysing what happened in Britain following the East India Company's acquisition of a vast territorial empire in South Asia. Drawing on a mass of hitherto unused material contained in the company's administrative and financial records, the book offers a reconstruction of the inner workings of the company as it made the remarkable transition from business to empi…

It has long been thought that the East India Company's export trade was of little importance to the domestic economy. This article challenges such a view by providing a detailed reconstruction of the supply systems through which goods were procured for shipment to Asia. As well as quantifying Company expenditure on commodities and identifying regional industries linked to the East India trade, the article demonstrates how manufactures and raw mat…

In recent years important advances have been made in our understanding of the relationship between Britain's overseas empire and the metropolitan or domestic economy. In an important article Cain and Hopkins have attempted to establish a 'connexion between gentlemanly capitalism based on landed wealth and overseas expansion, particularly in its imperialist forms, between i688 and i850'. They present a convincing alternative to the view that the '…

  • Revenue and Reform

    Open Access•H V Bowen•BOOK•Revenue and Reform•1991

Revenue and Reform offers a reappraisal of British imperial politics in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. It is traditional to regard the 1760s as a time when British politicians were preoccupied with the crises which eventually led to the outbreak of the American War of Independence in 1775. Here, for the first time, a different imperial problem - the Indian problem - is examined in detail. Politicians struggled to come to terms with …
