Photogrammetric Point-Cloud Replicability When Documenting Forensic Archaeological Scenes under Variable Lighting Conditions
Forensic archaeological scenes involving human skeletal remains in wooded environments can be challenging to documentutilizing close-range photogrammetry (CRP) due to the complex nature of outdoor scenes. Previous research has demonstrated that changinglighting conditions can negatively affect three-dimensional (3D) model quality. The purpose of this research was therefore to test theimpact of variable lighting on the replicability of 3D point cl…
Documenting Outdoor Simulated Scenes with Photogrammetry
In both traditional and forensic archaeology, the thorough documentation of context is essential to a proper excavation or recovery, as the processing of archaeological sites and forensic scenes is an inherently destructive process. Over the past few decades, close-range photogrammetry (CRP) has become increasingly utilized by archaeologists to digitally record their excavations. However, CRP has not been employed regularly during outdoor forensi…
Analyzing Cut Mark Characteristics on Bone from Chopping/Hacking Tools
Sharp force trauma (SFT) is a mechanism of traumatic injury in which a tool with a slanted edge impacts the skin and/orbone, producing a cut mark. While experimental SFT research has been conducted utilizing smaller tools, minimal research focuses on damage inflicted by chopping/hacking tools. Thus, the purpose of this research was to experimentally evaluate and analyze macroscopic characteristics of chopping/hacking trauma inflicted on pig bones…
Documenting Skeletal Scatters in Obstructed Wooded Environments Using Close-Range Photogrammetry
Forensic scenes involving human skeletal remains in obstructed wooded environments are challenging to document. One potential solution is to document the scene in 3D utilizing close-range photogrammetry (CRP). This method enables the generation of realistic 3D models and accurate plan-view maps of the scene. The purpose of this research was to explore the use of CRP to preserve contextual information of simulated scenes involving scattered human …

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope inter‐ and intra‐individual dietary reconstruction from the late 14th to early 18th century site of Alytus, Lithuania
OBJECTIVES: The Baltic region, particularly Lithuania, was a politically vibrant area of Eastern Europe during the medieval and early modern period. To better understand the diet of Lithuanians during the late 14th to early 18th century, we examine stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios from bone and dentin samples from the site of Alytus. We investigate possible dietary differences based on sex, age, and religious practice, as well as dietary…
Reconstructing diet in Napoleon's Grand Army using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis
Objectives Historical evidence has provided information regarding disease and mortality in Napoleon Bonaparte's Grand Army, but dietary information beyond individual soldier accounts remains scarce. The purpose of this research is to reconstruct the diets of Napoleon's multiethnic army who were associated with the Russian Campaign of 1812. Materials and Methods We conducted stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratio analysis on femoral bone collage…

Interpersonal violence between 18th century Native Americans and Europeans in Ohio
During the winter of 1778–1779, a garrison of 176 individuals lived within the walls of a Revolutionary era stronghold named Ft. Laurens on the banks of the Tuscarawas River, near the present‐day town of Bolivar, Ohio. At least 21 individuals were buried in the fort's cemetery during its occupation, 13 of whom were supposedly killed and scalped by Native Americans while gathering firewood and foraging horses. The purpose of this study is to build…
