This essay explores the poetics, technology, and meanings of the China-made thermos to reflect on the author’s time in China as a student and later a tour guide in the first years of the long 1980s. This marvelous “ritual vessel” of warmth provided a “social and economic infrastructure,” delivering hot water in Beijing’s cold winters. Writing in Water, or, Evanescence, Enchantment and Ethnography in aChinese Urban Park
This article reflects upon my experience of filmmaking in a public park in B eijing where I learned to write C hinese calligraphy in water. The essay is committed to the idea that people simultaneously produce persons and worlds in practices that result in the material mediations within which those selves are entangled, and also powerfully engage the environment. This essay demonstrates that where the image's gestures animate, supplement, and haunt the written text, we find the edge of our critical practice. When I first took office in this county, I went to pay my respects in the City God Temple. It was quite large and upon investigation turned out to have been built in 1557. It had already been some time since the last renovations had fallen again into disrepair.
