  • Changes in Isotopic Niches across Stages of the Annual Cycle in the Arctic Tern ( Sterna paradisaea )

Open Access•Isabeau Pratte, Kelly A Boadway et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2018

Arctic Terns (Sterna paradisaea) are iconic seabirds of polar latitudes, whose successful reproduction is thought to depend on local food supplies near breeding colonies. We used stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in eggs, blood, and feathers of terns breeding in the Canadian High Arctic to compare their isotopic niche between life history stages and between two years. The isotopic niche of terns was smaller during incubation than during pre-…

  • Breeding Arctic Terns Kill Lemmings

    Open Access•Mark L Mallory, Kelly A Boadway et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2010

Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) are well known for exhibiting vigorous defense of nests at their breeding colonies. However, in 2008 we observed a previously unreported behavior by terns. We watched chick-rearing adult terns attacking collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus), which included repeatedly lifting them into the air and dropping them to the tundra until they died. Terns attack certain birds and mammals that intrude on their breed…
