Altricial Patterns in Prenatal Skeletal Development of Two Large Neotropical Primates
Understanding prenatal skeletal development is essential for pregnancy monitoring and veterinary care, as well as for understanding reproductive strategies, evolutionary differences, and ecological adaptations. This study provides an ultrasonographic description of prenatal bone development in two large neotropical primates, the Poeppig's woolly monkey ( Lagothrix lagothricha poeppigii , n = 24) and the Juruá howler monkey ( Alouatta juara , n = …
Predicting animal abundance through local ecological knowledge
Given the ongoing environmental degradation from local to global scales, it is fundamental to develop more efficient means of gathering data on species and ecosystems. Local ecological knowledge, in which local communities can consistently provide information on the status of animal species over time, has been shown to be effective. Several studies demonstrate that data gathered using local ecological knowledge (LEK)‐based methods are comparable …
Update of the geographic range of Humboldt's squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri cassiquiarensis cassiquiarensis Lesson, 1840) using a model‐based approach
Saimiri cassiquiarensis cassiquiarensis (Cebidae) is a primate subspecies with a wide distribution in the Amazonian region of Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. However, the boundaries of its geographic range remain poorly defined. This study presents new occurrence localities for this subspecies and updates its distribution using a compiled data set of 140 occurrence records based on literature, specimens vouchered in scientific collections, and n…
Traditional Territory in a Protected Area
Implementing sustainable management strategies for common-use resources influences the territorialization processes of traditional peoples and communities. This article aims to provide historical context on the use of natural resources in the Amanã Lake region, Maraã-AM. It also seeks to describe the territorial boundaries and hunting areas of one riverine community, presenting a proposal for establishing the sustainable management of subsistence…
Variation in Food and Nutritional Stability Among Amazonian Populations Living in a Context of Dramatic Seasonal Flooding
Social Correlates of and Reasons for Primate Meat Consumption in Central Amazonia
Phylogenetic relationships in the genus Cheracebus (Callicebinae, Pitheciidae)
Cheracebus is a new genus of New World primate of the family Pitheciidae, subfamily Callicebinae. Until recently, Cheracebus was classified as the torquatus species group of the genus Callicebus . The genus Cheracebus has six species: C. lucifer, C. lugens, C. regulus, C. medemi, C. torquatus , and C. purinus , which are all endemic to the Amazon biome. Before the present study, there had been no conclusive interpretation of the phylogenetic rela…
Social and Biological Correlates of Wild Meat Consumption and Trade by Rural Communities in the Jutaí River Basin, Central Amazonia
Wild animals are an important source of food and income throughout the Amazon basin, particularly for forest-dependent communities living in the more remote regions. Through interviews in 51 households within 16 communities in the Jutaí River Extractive Reserve, Amazonas, Brazil, we determined animal taxa consumed and frequency of wild meat consumption, as well as patterns of wild meat trade. We then investigated the influence of social and biolo…
Adapting a Traditional Hunting Technique to Improve Capture Rates for the Endangered Yellow-Footed Tortoise ( Chelonoidis denticulatus ) during Ecological Surveys in Amazonia
The lack of cost-effective methods to detect game species in tropical forests hinders reliable assessments of their population status and the planning of effective actions for their sustainable use. Tortoises are among the most hunted species in Amazonia, but present low detectability in the wild when using current scientific methods. Traditional hunters in the region use specialized methods to capture tortoises, and such knowledge could provide …
Widespread Use of Traditional Techniques by Local People for Hunting the Yellow-Footed Tortoise ( Chelonoidis denticulatus ) Across the Amazon
Understanding the repertoire of hunting techniques used by traditional peoples in tropical forests is crucial for recognizing the role of traditional knowledge in hunting activities, as well as assessing the impact of harvests on game species. We describe the hunting techniques used across Amazonia by Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples for hunting yellow-footed tortoises ( Chelonoidis denticulatus), one of the most consumed species in the biom…
