  • Addressing the Intensity of Changes in the Prehistoric Population Dynamics

Open Access•Tamara Blagojević, Marko Porčić et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Referencias: 32

The intensity of changes in the population dynamics of the Early Neolithic (ca. 6250–5300 cal BC) communities in the Central Balkans was addressed by estimating the growth rate values. The Bayesian approach (Crema and Shoda 2021) of estimating intrinsic growth rates by fitting different models of population growth was applied to radiocarbon dates from the Early Neolithic sites in Serbia. We explored two possible episodes of population growth base…

  • Understanding the local dynamics

    Open Access•Tamara Blagojević•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 9

This study addresses the dynamics of the Neolithic expansion in the Central Balkans by reconstructing its direction and speed of spread. The Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method is applied to the earliest radiocarbon dates from Starčevo culture sites in Serbia. Local speed estimates are derived from the earliest dates within specified spatial bins. The results confirm the assumed south-to-north direction, revealing rapid progression, particula…

  • New Radiocarbon Dates, Stable Isotope, and Anthropological Analysis of Prehistoric Human Bones from the Balkans and Southwestern Carpathian Basin

Open Access•Jelena Jovanović, Tamara Blagojević et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2021

The paper provides a detailed overview of new radiocarbon dates, stable isotopes, and anthropological information obtained on prehistoric human remains (mostly Neolithic) from the Balkans and southwestern Carpathian Basin. It covers a large chronological sequence from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age (9746–2628 cal BC), which encompasses different archaeological cultures. In total 76 radiocarbon dates deriving from 27 sites were obtained, coupled…

  • Revealing the “hidden” Pannonian and Central Balkan Mesolithic

Open Access•Ivana Živaljević, Vesna Dimitrijević et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • Expansion of the Neolithic in Southeastern Europe

    Open Access•Marko Porčić, Mladen Nikolić et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 39

  • The timing and tempo of the Neolithic expansion across the Central Balkans in the light of the new radiocarbon evidence

Open Access•Marko Porčić, Tamara Blagojević et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 13

The new set of radiocarbon dates was used to explore the timing and tempo of the Neolithic expansion across the Central Balkans. Our results suggest that the first farmers arrived in this region around or few decades before 6200 cal BC. The observed spatio-temporal pattern based on the radiocarbon data suggests that the general direction of the expansion was along the south-north axis. The regression analysis (arrival time vs. distance from the o…

  • Early Neolithic population dynamics in the Eastern Balkans and the Great Hungarian Plain

Open Access•Tamara Blagojević, Marko Porčić et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2017

In this study, we reconstruct population dynamics in the Early Neolithic of the Eastern Balkans and the Great Hungarian Plain using frequency of radiocarbon dates as a population proxy. The method of summed calibrated radiocarbon probability distributions is applied to a set of dates recently published in Bulgaria and Hungary. The aim is to test the hypothesis of the Neolithic demographic transition (NDT) in these regions and to compare the patt…
