A Narrative Analysis of the Group for Abolishing Whiteness
In October 2019, 26 white-identifying students met in the Group for Abolishing Whiteness (GfAW). The GfAW was a biweekly intragroup dialogic space where white-identifying students examined and uprooted their everyday relationship to whiteness. This grounded theory study examines how socioeconomically disadvantaged and predominantly Black fathers construct fatherhood identity amid systemic adversity. Drawing on 11 focus groups with 40 fathers enrolled in a U.S. Midwestern fatherhood program, the study explores the multidimensional nature of fatherhood and the ways in which structural, interpersonal, and identity-based factors shape paternal engagement.
