  • An Anthropological Conception of the Initial Peopling of the Americas

    Ruth Gruhn•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2023•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 18

A currently popular model of the initial settlement of the Americas proposes a very rapid occupation of both continents beginning with the initial entry in early postglacial times. Considering the ethnographic record of small-group hunter-gatherer adaptive skill and social networking, I argue that the peopling of the two immense and diverse continents must have been a slow process of local adaptation, and initial entry must have begun before the …

  • The Chiquihuite Cave, a Real Novelty? Observations about the Still-ignored South American Prehistory

Eric Boëda, Ruth Gruhn et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2020•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 10

The recently reported discovery of cultural evidence at Chiquihuite Cave (Zacatecas, Mexico), produced by humans of at least 26,500 calendar years ago, is a major advance in research into early human occupations in the Americas. Thirteen of the 239 lithic artifacts recovered from the SC-C stratigraphic component, dated during and before the Last Glacial Maximum, are illustrated in Ardelean et al. (2020. “Evidence of Human Occupation in Mexico aro…

  • Observations Concerning the Cerutti Mastodon Site

    Ruth Gruhn•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2018•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 2

My examination of the broken bone fragments in the Cerutti Mastodon Site collection indicates that the hypothesis of breakage by modern heavy machinery is invalid, as a thick precipitate of soil carbonate on the broken surfaces proves that the breakage was indeed very ancient. The site remains an anomaly in present modeling of the initial peopling of the Americas

  • El Niño controls Holocene rabbit and hare populations in Baja California

    Open Access•Isaac Hart, J M Broughton et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major source of climatic variation worldwide, with significant impacts on modern human and animal populations. However, few detailed records exist on the long-term effects of ENSO on prehistoric vertebrate populations. Here we examine how lagomorph (rabbit and hare) deposition rate, population age structure and taxonomic composition from Abrigo de los Escorpiones, a well-dated, trans-Holocene vertebrat…

  • Reconstructing Prehistoric Population Movements

    Ruth Gruhn•ARTICLE•Reviews in Anthropology•2006•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 15

Books discussed here focus upon the initial peopling of the Americas and the worldwide development of food production. They examine postulated historical instances in which genes, languages, and cultural elements appear to correlate, indicating major population movements in prehistory. Recognized experts in historical linguistics, archaeology, and molecular genetics review current methodology, available data, and models of global and regional pop…

  • A Review of Lynch's Descriptions of South American Pleistocene Sites

    Open Access•Ruth Gruhn, Alan L Bryan•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1991•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 13

The description of major South American Pleistocene sites by Lynch (1990) contains significant errors and omissions. The artifact assemblage at the Colombian site of Tibitó, dated at 11,740 ± 140 B.P., is much larger than indicated by Lynch and well represents the Abriense industry, which features small unifacially retouched flake tools and core tools, with no stone projectile points. Lynch did not describe the 1976 stratigraphic profile at the V…

Neutron activation analysis was used to determine the chemical composition of sources of obsidian artifacts from the Paleoindian site of Los Tapiales in Guatemala with an occupation date of around 10,700 radiocarbon years ago. Three different sources were detected, all between 50 and 75 km from Los Tapiales. The predominant source represented in our ten samples was in the Rio Pixcayá area, and another was in the Tajumulco area. A third source, id…

  • Big and Little Traditions in Guatemalan Anthropology [and Comments and Replies]

    Alfredo Mendez-Dominguez, Nelly Arvelo‐jiménez et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1975•Citada por: 2

Anthropological work in Guatemala is seen in terms of two traditions according to whether local or foreign researchers are involved. For exposition purposes and historical reasons, the little tradition is reviewed with reference to Sol Tax's work. Three topics are discussed: (1) definitions and conceptions about the people and their culture, (2) social units, and (3) change. The author's own work is also included in this review. Thus the article …

  • A Contribution to Pleistocene Chronology in Southeast Essex, England

Open Access•Ruth Gruhn, Alan Lyle Bryan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1974

Parallel to the Essex coast north of the mouth of the Thames, a series of gravel spreads ranging in altitude from near sea level westward to more than 200 ft O.D. (mean sea level) proved to be the remnants of an abandoned Thames/Medway terrace system, rather than a series of “raised” beaches, as their location had suggested. The seaward side of the ancient river valley has subsequently been “captured” by subsidence. Evidence is given for five ter…

  • Problems Relating to the Neothermal Climatic Sequence

    Open Access•Alan Lyle Bryan, Ruth Gruhn•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1964•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 19

The sequence of three phases (Anathermal, Altithermal, Medithermal) of the Postglacial or Neothermal temperature curve, although demonstrably a reality, has been used improperly to determine absolute dates and past climatic conditions from archaeological deposits. A review of the historic development of the concept of the three sequent Neothermal temperature phases reveals the assumptions on which absolute dating of these phases has been based. A…
