  • Associations between Coronavirus and Immune Response, Cardiorespiratory Fitness Rehabilitation and Physical Activity

    Open Access•Sandra Silva-Santos, António M Monteiro et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

COVID-19 has serious effects on cardiorespiratory capacity. In this sense, physical activity has been identified as beneficial in the treatment of cardiorespiratory diseases due to its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive benefits. To date, no study has been found on cardiorespiratory capacity and rehabilitation in patients cured after COVID-19. Thus, this brief report aims to relate the benefits of physical activity to cardiorespiratory funct…

  • Weekly Training Load across a Standard Microcycle in a Sub-Elite Youth Football Academy

Open Access•José E Teixeira, Luís Branquinho et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Compensatory training sessions have been highlighted as useful strategies to solve the differential weekly training load between the players' starting status. However, the influence of the players' starting status is still understudied in sub-elite youth football. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the weekly training load on a standard microcycle in starters and non-starters of a sub-elite youth football academy. The weekly training load…

  • Effect of High-Volume Training on Psychological State and Performance in Competitive Swimmers

Open Access•Oussama Gaied Chortane, Sofiene Amara et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This study aimed to examine the effect of four weeks of aquatic high-volume training (HVT) on the psychological state (somatic, cognitive anxiety, and self-confidence) and sprint swimming performance (50 m front crawl) compared to the standard training program (moderate volume training) in competitive swimmers. Twenty-eight male competitive swimmers participated in this study and were randomly allocated into two groups: HVT group (n = 14; age = 1…

  • EMG Signal Processing for the Study of Localized Muscle Fatigue—Pilot Study to Explore the Applicability of a Novel Method

Open Access•Sandra Rodrigues, Luís Palermo de Faria et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This pilot study aimed to explore a method for characterization of the electromyogram frequency spectrum during a sustained exertion task, performed by the upper limb. Methods: Nine participants underwent an isometric localized muscle fatigue protocol on an isokinetic dynamometer until exhaustion, while monitored with surface electromyography (sEMG) of the shoulder's external rotators. Firstly, three methods of signal energy analysis based on pri…

  • Relationship between fear of falling and balance factors in healthy elderly women

    António M Monteiro, Pedro M Forte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2021

The aim of this study was to develop a confirmatory model, using structural equation modeling, to describe and explain the fear of falling in elderly women. Forty-one participants (67.69 ± 5.30 years) were selected to test a theoretical model. The final model revealed that the fear of falling is related to impaired balance (dynamic and static). Strength has a positive effect on both dynamic and static balance. Strength depends on bone mineral den…

  • The Effect of Concurrent Resistance Training on Upper Body Strength, Sprint Swimming Performance and Kinematics in Competitive Adolescent Swimmers. A Randomized Controlled Trial

Open Access•Sofiene Amara, Tatiane Muniz Barbosa et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study aimed to examine the effect of 9 weeks of concurrent resistance training (CRT) between resistance on dry land (bench press (BP) and medicine ball throw) and resistance in water (water parachute and hand paddles) on muscle strength, sprint swimming performance and kinematic variables compared by the usual training (standard in-water training). Twenty-two male competitive swimmers participated in this study and were randomly allocated to…

    Open Access•Pedro M Forte, Jorge E Morais et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The drag crisis phenomenon is the drop of drag coefficient (Cd) with increasing Reynolds number (Re) or speed. The aim of this study was to assess the hypothetical drag crisis phenomenon in a sports setting, assessing it in a bicycle–cyclist system. A male elite-level cyclist was recruited for this research and his competition bicycle, helmet, suit, and shoes were used. A three-dimensional (3D) geometry was obtained with a 3D scan with the subjec…

Open Access•Víctor Machado Reis, Eduardo Borba Neves et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Oxygen uptake (VO 2 ) kinetics has been analyzed through mathematical modeling of constant work-rate exercise, however, the exponential nature of the VO 2 response in resistance exercise is currently unknown. The present work assessed the VO 2 on-kinetics during two different sub maximal intensities in the inclined bench press and in the seated leg extension exercise. Twelve males (age: 27.2 ± 4.3 years, height: 177 ± 5 cm, body mass: 79.0 ± 10.6…
