Can Socioeconomic Variables Influence Bird Hunting Activity in the Brazil's Semi-Arid Region
What interferes with conducting free lists? A comparative ethnobotanical experiment
Background The free list, also written "freelist", or "free recall", is an ethnographic method that characterizes the local knowledge of a population about a given cultural domain. However, there is still much to elucidate about the variables that can influence the number of items that participants cite using this technique. This study applied a casual-comparative experimental design to analyze whether 3 months' time, age, and external stimuli in…

Medicinal plant knowledge in a context of cultural pluralism
Does the selection of medicinal plants by Brazilian local populations suffer taxonomic influence
Results indicate that the chemical specificity of taxonomic groups directly influences medicinal plant selection. Moreover, when data presented here are compared to other studies, there is clearly an overuse pattern for families like Lamiaceae, Rosaceae and Euphorbiaceae and an underuse pattern for Poaceae and Orchidaceae
Knowledge and Use of Wild Food Plants in Areas of Dry Seasonal Forests in Brazil
The investigation aimed to compare the knowledge about food plants in rural communities of the Caatinga. The study was conducted in two rural communities in northeastern Brazil. Data collection utilized different ethnobotanical methods, including free listing, semi-structured interviews, and recall. Native species are less frequently consumed as food in both locations. Fruits are the most frequently cited wild resource, but in practice, most of t…
Traditional botanical knowledge of artisanal fishers in southern Brazil
BackgroundThis study characterized the botanical knowledge of artisanal fishers of the Lami community, Porto Alegre, southern Brazil based on answers to the following question: Is the local botanical knowledge of the artisanal fishers of the rural-urban district of Lami still active, even since the district's insertion into the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre?MethodsThis region, which contains a mosaic of urban and rural areas, hosts the Lami…
Socio-economic predictors of domestic wood use in an Atlantic forest area (north-east Brazil)
Given the excessive use pressure on forests, characterisation of the major users of forest resources can help guide conservation efforts. This study examines whether socio-economic variables explain domestic wood use in an area of Atlantic forest in the community of Três Ladeiras (Pernambuco, north-east Brazil). Socio-economic data were collected from 62 households, and geometric measurements of wood products in each household were taken to calcu…
Caatinga plants with nutritional potential
A historical review about the native food species from caatinga in Pernambuco state, Brazil was conducted. A matrix of the food plants was created using a primary source (“Contribution to the study of the flora from Pernambuco, Brazil”, by Dárdano de Andrade-Lima) and secondary sources of past use (centuries XVI/ XVII/ XIX), contemporary (50s-70s decades) and current (from the 70s decade) to the central work. This study has revealed the potential…

Local Uses of Native Plants in an Area of Caatinga Vegetation (Pernambuco, NE Brazil)
The present work sought to identify the utilitarian potential of woody plant species in a fragment of caatinga (semi-arid) vegetation located in the “Agreste” region of Pernambuco State, NE Brazil. The study was undertaken in two stages: a floristic inventory was made of a forest fragment adjacent to the community examined in order to identify the species present in the area; this being followed by an ethnobotanical survey employing semi-structur…
Re-examining hypotheses concerning the use and knowledge of medicinal plants
BACKGROUND: The Caatinga (dry land vegetation) is one of the most characteristic vegetation types in northeastern Brazil. It occupies a large percentage of the semi-arid region there, and generally supports two major types of economic activity: seasonal agriculture and the harvesting of plant products. However, very little information is available concerning the interaction of people with the plants of the Caatinga. METHODS: A study was undertake…
Knowledge and use of medicinal plants by local specialists in an region of Atlantic Forest in the state of Pernambuco (Northeastern Brazil)
The study of local knowledge about natural resources is becoming increasingly important in defining strategies and actions for conservation or recuperation of residual forests. This study therefore sought to: collect information from local populations concerning the use of Atlantic Forest medicinal plants; verify the sources of medicinal plants used; determine the relative importance of the species surveyed, and; calculate the informant consensus…

Medicinal plants popularly used in the Xingó region - a semi-arid location in Northeastern Brazil
The aim of this study was to identify plant species among the diverse flora of the caatinga ecosystem that are used therapeutically. Research was undertaken in the municipalities of Piranhas and Delmiro Gouveia, in the Xingó region (state of Alagoas, NE Brazil). In order to identify the medicinal plants used in this region, semi-structured questionnaires were applied. The species cited were collected and sent to the Xingó Herbarium for taxonomic …

Revising the Cultural Significance Index
This article proposes a new way of calculating the Cultural Significance Index (CSI), with the goal of improving it as an instrument for recording the importance of each plant species to human groups. In the present formula (CSI = σ(i×e×c)×CF), different variables are considered: i (species management), e (use preference), and c (use frequency); in addition, a correction factor was introduced (CF). Among the ten most important species, nine are n…
Use and traditional management of Anadenanthera colubrina(Vell.) Brenan in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil
The use and management of "angico" (Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan) by a rural community in northeastern Brazil was examined. By employing different techniques of data collection and population structure analysis, it was determined that this species had multiple uses within the local community (especially as timber and for other wood products), and that local management of this species is based on simple maintenance and harvesting of indi…
