  • Homestead Size, Gender, and Aggression among Gusii Children

    Open Access•Robert L Munroe, Sara B Nerlove•ARTICLE•Ethos•2003•Referencias: 17

Behavioral aggression in natural settings was investigated in relation to gender and homestead membership size among 43 Gusii children between the ages of four and eight. No differences were found in the frequency of boys' and girls' aggression, an outcome already observed in the same community of "Nyansongo" during the Six Cultures Study a decade earlier. An association between children's aggression and the number of persons with whom they resid…

  • My Brother's Keeper

    Thomas S Weisner, Ronald Gallimore et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1977•Citada por: 162•Referencias: 9

Children often act as caretakers responsible for other children. Such child caretaking varies widely in its frequency, as well as in the degree of institutionalization, relationship to parental caretaking, degree of indulgence, and incidence at differing ages. Residence and household patterns, size of the family, and the subsistence economy, daily routines, and work load of the family are important in determining availability of child caretakers …

In 30 of the 83 supplementary feeding is begun before the age of 1 month in 26 between 1 and 6 months and in 27 after 6 months. A previous discussion of the division of labor by sex done in 1970 stated that the degree to which women participate in su…

  • A Further Examination of Cognitive Aspects of English Kin Terms1

    Open Access•Sara B Nerlove, Michael L Burton•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1972•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 6

This study presents a further test of the componential structure of American-English kinship terminology proposed by Romney and D'Andrade (1964). It includes more terms and sheds light upon the structural (or cognitive) locations of the female kin terms as well as the male terms. Collaterality emerges as the most important dimension

  • Population Growth in a Kenya Community1

    Open Access•Sara B Nerlove, Robert A Levine•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1972•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Population figures based on surveys conducted in 1957 and 1967 are presented for the Gusii community of "Nyansongo" in southwestern Kenya. The figures suggest a considerable increase in population, possibly even greater than that for Kenya as a whole, which has one of the highest rates of natural increase in Africa. The social consequences of such an increase are referred to, and emphasis is given to the need for ethnographic restudy of communiti…

  • Comparison of genetic and anthropological interpretations of population isolates in Aguacatenango, Chiapas, Mexico

    Open Access•Robert P Erickson, Sara B Nerlove et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1970•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 16

Intensive demographic and genetic studies were made of Aguacatenango, a partial isolate population in Chiapas, Mexico. The census showed higher rates of birth than mortality, with a stable population maintained by emigration. Complete enumeration showed many discrepancies between the ideal and actual mating patterns. Though ideally an endogamous town, many marriages were to outsiders. Also many occurred between the two allegedly endogamous barrio…

  • Sibling Terminology and Cross-Sex Behavior1

    Open Access•Sara B Nerlove, Sara Nerlove et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1967•Citada por: 38•Referencias: 6

This paper examines variations among sibling terminologies and suggests a functional explanation for selected aspects of the differences among systems. It presents evidence to suggest that behavior that places emphasis on cross-sex relations will lend to produce terminologies in which siblings of the same sex are distinguished from siblings of the opposite sex. A possible typology of kinds of sibling terminologies is given
