This paper tries to single out the reasons of al-Ġazālī’s lack of interest in the “lesser ǧihād ”, military action. In Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn he maintains – according to the Sunna of the Prophet – the superiority of the “greater ǧihād ”, the effort upon oneself for moral and religious improvement.
