  • Food and social complexity at Çayönü Tepesi, southeastern Anatolia

Open Access•Jessica Pearson, M La Grove et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2013

The identification of early social complexity and differentiation in early village societies has been approached in the past most notably through the evaluation of rituals and architectural layouts. Such studies could be complemented by an approach that provides data about everyday behaviours of individuals. We took 540 human and animal bone samples for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis from the Neolithic site of Çayönü Tepesi in southe…

  • Exploring the relationship between weaning and infant mortality

    Open Access•J Pearson, J A Pearson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2010•Citada por: 27•Referencias: 41

We measured stable nitrogen isotope ratios in bone collagen of 60 individuals from the early Neolithic (9th–8th millennium Cal. BC) sites of Çayönü Tepesi and Aşıklı Höyük. Our aim was to identify the duration of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), compare this with juvenile mortality at each site, and assess whether there was a relationship between them. The isotope analysis suggests that weaning commenced at about 1 year at Aşıklı Höyük and around 2…

  • Skeletal pathology of a high-ranking official from Thrace (Turkey, last quarter of the 4th century BC)

    Open Access•Metin Özbek•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•Referencias: 5

A male human skeleton from Thrace dated at around 320 BC was found in a wealthy tomb 12 km from what is now Tekirdağ, Turkey. The occupant of the tomb died at the age of 40–45 years and has a pathologic left humerus caused most probably by traumatic injury. It is 9 cm shorter than the right humerus. A drainage fistula penetrating into the medullary cavity occurs at its proximal end. Due to severe arthritic destruction, the left humeral head has c…

  • Cranial deformation in a subadult sample from Değirmentepe (Chalcolithic, Turkey)

    Open Access•Metin Özbek•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2001•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 8

Human skeletal remains from the Chalcolithic period of Değirmentepe, Turkey, near the Euphrates River, display artificial cranial deformation of the circular type. Human skeletal remains belonging to 31 individual have been dated to the Chalcolithic period (second half of the fifth millennium BC, uncalibrated). The remains include foetuses, infants, children and juveniles; but no adult skeletons. Either the adults were buried elsewhere or floodin…

Many burned skeletal remains have been found in the Çayönü Skull Building. The upper layer yielded 71 skulls and some post-cranial remains which might have been burned during the intentional burning of the building. In the earlier layer BM la, there were also many burned human remains. A burned bone deposit from this layer was studied using taphonomic approach so as to reconstruct the burial phases. It appears that the bones were selected prior t…

Starting from the study of the deformed skulls of Byblos (Lebanon, Chakolithic age) we have reviewed the various regions in the Near East (Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, etc.) where this custom has been manifested as early as the Neolithic age. The comparison, by means of some statistical tests between undeformed and deformed skulls, allowed us to reveal some modifications such as the reduction of the maximum cranial breadth, the increase of the maximum…
