  • Towards a phonological typology of the Kalahari Basin Area languages

    Open Access•Hirosi Nakagawa, Alena Witzlack-Makarevich et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2023

This article reports some results of the first large-scale, comprehensive survey of the phonological systems of the Khoisan languages of the Kalahari Basin Area. These languages are famous for their large sets of click phonemes, a typologically rare characteristic otherwise found only in a limited number of languages worldwide. They are also unique because the click phonemes carry a high functional load in terms of phonemic and lexical distinctio…

  • Current Trends in African Linguistics

Open Access•Hitomi Ono, Kazuhiro Kawachi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•2021

  • Genetic structure and sex‐biased gene flow in the history of southern African populations

Open Access•Vladimir Bajić, Chiara Barbieri et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 62

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the genetic history of southern African populations with a special focus on their paternal history. We reexamined previous claims that the Y-chromosome haplogroup E1b1b (E-M293) was brought to southern Africa by pastoralists from eastern Africa, and investigated patterns of sex-biased gene flow in southern Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed previously published complete mtDNA genome sequences and ∼900 kb of NRY…

  • Unraveling the complex maternal history of Southern African Khoisan populations

Open Access•Chiara Barbieri, Tom Güldemann et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 42

The Khoisan populations of southern Africa are known to harbor some of the deepest‐rooting lineages of human mtDNA; however, their relationships are as yet poorly understood. Here, we report the results of analyses of complete mtDNA genome sequences from nearly 700 individuals representing 26 populations of southern Africa who speak diverse Khoisan and Bantu languages. Our data reveal a multilayered history of the indigenous populations of southe…

  • The importance of Taste verbs in some Khoe languages

    Open Access•Hirosi Nakagawa•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2012•Citada por: 1

Focusing on the perception verb systems in three little documented Khoe languages, i.e., ⫲Haba, G∣ui, and G∥ana, the present paper demonstrates their typologically unique feature, namely the crosslinguistically uncommon behavior of TASTE among the five sense modalities involved in perception verbs. By using the new findings the paper examines two models of the sense-modality hierarchy proposed by Viberg (1984, 2001). In addition, this study also …

  • A first report on the click accompaniments of |Gui

    Open Access•Hirosi Nakagawa•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•1996•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

This paper aims at describing the click accompaniments of |Gui, a little known Central Khoisan language, and presenting some new findings which may contribute to general phonetics as well as Khoisan linguistics. The phonetic features described here are based upon linguistic field research by the author into the |Gui language in the Xade area, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana, from August to December in 1992, from August to October in 1…
