  • Neandertal Lithic Industries at La Quina

    Arthur J Jelinek•BOOK•Neandertal lithic industries at…•2013•Referencias: 30

Although Neandertals lived in Europe and western Asia for more than 200,000 years, we know surprisingly little about them or about their everyday lives. Evidence of their behavior is largely derived from the surviving pieces of chipped stone and animal bone that resulted from their activities. One of the largest concentrations of stone and bone artifacts left by Neandertals was at the famous archaeological site of La Quina in southwestern France.…

Philip G Chase, Dominique Armand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1994•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 16

The 1986 excavations at the Mousterian site of La Quina, Charente, France included a witness section left intact by an earlier researcher, Germaine Henri-Martin. Zooarchaeological study of material from this witness section was designed to evaluate the effects of a number of different natural and human factors. This analysis demonstrated that the assemblage was actually the product of a number of different processes, some natural and some human, …

  • Perspectives from the Old World on the Habitation of the New

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1992•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

Despite the much briefer period of research and many fewer archaeologists involved, there is now clear and incontrovertible evidence of human occupation in Australia at a period significantly earlier than can be documented with comparable evidence from the New World. An explanation of the differences in the present record between these two regions that relies on an insufficient study of situations favorable to the preservation of earlier material…

  • The Tabun Cave and Paleolithic Man in the Levant

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•Science•1982

Recent excavations at the deeply stratified Late Pleistocene cave site of Tabun on Mount Carmel have yielded a long sequence of Middle and Lower Paleolithic industries and associated geological and environmental evidence that has important implications for the understanding of man's cultural and biological development in that period. An analysis of these materials strongly supports a continuity in cultural development at this site from about 130,…

  • François Bordes, 1919-1981

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1982•Referencias: 48

Frangois Bordes, one of the most eminent prehistorians of the last 3 decades, died of a heart attack in Tucson, Arizona, on April 30, 1981. He was born Henri Louis Frangois Bordes to Andre and Aline Alicot Bordes in a small chateau at Rives in Lot-et-Garonne, France, on December 30, 1919. His father, a prosperous West African trader, had returned to his native Perigord, and Bordes's strongest ties throughout his life were with this beautiful regi…

  • Paleolithic Culture and Culture Change

    Daniel Stiles, A J Ammerman et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 13

A debate concerning the meaning of stone artifact and assemblage variability during the Paleolithic has been in progress for some time now. This paper attempts to link theory and method in suggesting specific methods for the investigation of whether stone tools can act as markers of culturally bounded social units, i.e., ethnic groups, in the past. Hypotheses are formulated based on the theory of culture tradition, and test implications are deduc…

    Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•1977•Citada por: 30•Referencias: 12

Infrastructures are material forms that allow for the possibility of exchange over space. They are the physical networks through which goods, ideas, waste, power, people, and finance are trafficked. In this article I trace the range of anthropological ...Read More

  • New excavations at the Tabun cave, Mount Carmel, Israel, 1967-1972

  • The Production of Secondary Multiple Flakes

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek, B Bradley et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1971•Citada por: 6

Flakes having superimposed positive and negative bulbs of percussion may be produced in two ways: by being struck from a core from which a primary flake has previously been struck, or by being produced simultaneously with the primary flake. Conditions are defined under which those produced in the latter fashion can occur by natural agency, and thus need not be diagnostic of human industry

  • A Prehistoric Sequence in the Middle Pecos Valley, New Mexico

    Arthur J Jelinek•BOOK•A Prehistoric Sequence in the…•1967•Citada por: 5

Arthur J. Jelinek describes the results of his archaeological surveys and excavations in east central New Mexico and provides a prehistoric cultural sequence of the Middle Pecos Valley, from the Paleoindian period to the Late McKenzie Phase. With a contribution on pollen analysis by Paul S. Martin

  • An Artifact of Possible Wisconsin Age

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1966

A crude stone point from a gravel pit near Wichita Falls, Texas, is tentatively associated with a Wisconsin vertebrate fauna from the same locality on the basis of adhering cemented sand

  • Lithic Technology Conference, Les Eyzies, France

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1965•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 1

In 1964, a conference of American and French prehistorians explored the techniques of manufacture of chipped-stone artifacts. The conference was held at Les Eyzies, France, and included sessions in which implements were manufactured and discussion sessions in which artifact collections were evaluated in terms of observable evidences of manufacturing technique

  • Use of the Cumulative Graph in Temporal Ordering

    Open Access•Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1962

A cumulative graph which shows percentages of artifact types in assemblages is a useful tool for seriating large numbers of site samples when the chronological order of the appearance of types is known. This type of seriation has a distinct advantage over the bar-graph and Brainerd-Robinson techniques in speed and in the elimination of subjective judgment in ordering the assemblages

  • Mimbres Warfare

    Arthur J Jelinek•ARTICLE•KIVA•1961•Citada por: 1

A Mimbres bowl, recovered from excavations at the Mattocks ruin, is decorated with realistic designs which indicate that violent death and perhaps warfare was a part of Mimbres culture
