Depressed Mood and Flow-Mediated Dilation
OBJECTIVE: This systematic and quantitative review evaluates the literature on associations between depressed mood and flow-mediated dilation (FMD), a measure of endothelial function, in adults. METHODS: Published English-language articles (through December 2010) were identified from literature searches, assessed for data extraction, and evaluated for quality. RESULTS: The literature includes cross-sectional (n = 9) and retrospective examinations…
Adverse Impact of Mood on Flow-Mediated Dilation
OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of mood states on endothelial function, as measured noninvasively by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Substantial literature indicates that negative mood is linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not well defined. CVD is often preceded by dysfunction of the endothelium. METHODS: Healthy adults (n = 70; mean age, 36 years) completed the Profile …
Age and Ethnicity Differences in Short-Term Heart-Rate Variability
OBJECTIVE: Hypertension is more frequent and more severe in older individuals and in African Americans. Differences in autonomic nervous system activity might contribute to these differences. Autonomic effects on the heart can be studied noninvasively through analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). We examined the effects of age and ethnicity on HRV. METHODS: We studied 135 subjects (57 African Americans and 78 Caucasian Americans), aged 23 to …
Depression Treatment in Rural California
Depressive disorders have been recognized as disabling conditions of public health proportions. However, in areas underserved by mental health professionals, the treatment of depressed patients becomes challenging. Furthermore, patients living in rural areas and communities underserwd by health professionals are at risk for high levels of depressive symptoms and low access to care. Physicians (N = 58)of multiple nonpsychiatric specialties in Impe…
Neuropsychological Effects of One-Week Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Treatment in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Although results suggest overall cognitive improvement due to CPAP, no beneficial effects in any specific cognitive domain were found. Future studies of neuropsychological effects of CPAP treatment should include a placebo CPAP control group. Placebo studies that use longer-term treatment might demonstrate additional effects. It is also possible that, even at 2 cm H2O, CPAP conveys some beneficial neuropsychological effects
Influence of Cholesterol and Fasting Insulin Levels on Blood Pressure Reactivity
OBJECTIVE: This study examined how cholesterol and fasting insulin levels are related to blood pressure reactivity to behavioral stressors. METHODS: Subjects (N = 116) were 20 to 52 years old, at 80% to 150% of ideal weight, and had an average fasting cholesterol level of 183 mg/dl. Stressor tasks included mirror star tracing and a videotaped speech task. Changes from baseline were calculated for systolic and diastolic blood pressure. RESULTS: Ne…
